I currently have an 06 Z06 that I use as a daily driver. It's a fantastic car,but I've come to the realization that there's a lot more to a sports car than pure speed. Does anyone here have experience with both the Z06 & Cayman S?
I was at the Porsche dealership this past Saturday & was able to sit in a Cayman, but traffic was horrendous so I declined a test drive at that time.I could tell right away though that fit & finish was light years ahead of the GM car. Any help or opinions will be much appreciated.
Welcome to the Club! I think that if you look through our Cayman Comparison section you might find some information on this very topic. I have supplied you with a few links to get you started.
I'm a current C6 owner and was cross-shopping the Z06 and the CS. Two different experiences, completely. You either want the mid-engine, mucho-finesse CS experience, or power and track performance is more important to you and the Z06 is incomparable. Z06 performance in a CS-like package is called the F430. Interior fit and finish of the '08 3LZ Z06 is much better than your '06, but there are still other weaknesses (like the seats), and the fit and finish of SMC body panels will never be the same as the metal ones on the CS. The cars are so different that, IMHO, comparisons are just plain silly. If I could own both I would. I had to pick one, this time around I wanted finesse, so I picked the CS. I can easily see why someone else would pick the Z06. The existence of chocolate doesn't make vanilla taste any less good, and that's how I compare the two cars.
The Z06 handles great, but the feedback from the car is almost nonexistent.Also,500hp sounds great, but it is extremely difficult to get the power to the pavement. The temperature has to be above 70 & you really have to drive like there's an egg under the go pedal. If you try to take the Z06 to redline in 2nd & have it to the floor,it will break the tires loose above 5500rpm every time....which gets a little hairy at 90mph.
I've heard the CS is like a scalpel compared to the Corvette being a sledgehammer.I will use the car as my daily driver,so I think I will have more fun with the CS.
We had a Ferrari holding us both back the first lap, but not in the second. Listen closely and you can hear that I have to hold back in the corners because the corvette is holding me back. The corner workers agree and keep the passing flag pointed at the guy.

Most impressive! I was looking at all your videos that you posted in Zone 5. This video just goes to show that HP means very little if your car can't handle.
Well, it doesn't prove anything since obviously Glenn is a good driver, you can see him keeping a perfect line while the guy in the Z06...well, not so good...
I'd like to see the same race with a good driver in the Z06.
The Z06 is amazingly balanced with a 50/50 weight distribution, so it should handle pretty good, but it is probably a handful to control due to the massive torque and power.
The CS is just much easier to drive.

I agree that glenn is clearly a better driver, but the weight and size difference between the Z06 and CS clearly come into play.
I think a significant factor in the so-called "scalpel versus hatchet" comparison is whether or not you think massive low-end torque is a plus or a minus. On the Corvette and Viper forums any car without massive low-end torque is a "girl's car", which I think is bunk. I personally like "rev'ers" rather than "torquers", though the Z06 is arguably both. At the right time and in the right place all that torque is exciting, but most of the time I just find it annoying. It takes so much concentration to drive smoothly.
Even my base C6 is pretty unforgiving... either the driver shows some finesse or you'll crash. And the limits are so high and the control communication relatively low, that it's easy to get carried away and think the car is invincible. No car is, and when that C6 rear end comes around you had better know how to steer and when to brake. There are posts lamenting this all over the C6 forums, and ugly pics to go along with it. With the Caymans (base or CS) the car has more finesse so the driver can have more fun, and if the driver has finesse too all the better.
If I were going to track a car which would I pick? The CS. Every time. I'd sweat too much trying to keep a C6 under control; it would take the fun out of it.

The two cars are actually very close in size and weight. A Z06 is 175" long and weighs about 3150 soaking wet, so I'm not seeing your point. Driving skill seems to be the bigger factor. (Which is a good thing!)
Newtoit,
I think you hit the nail on the head yourself. I test drove a Z06 twice before deciding and came to the same conclusion, there was almost no feedback from anypart of the car. The Cayman, on the other hand, has a tremendous amount. The bottom line is which car is more fun for you to drive? For me, it wa
