My lease on my 335I is up at the end of the year so I was going to start looking for a new base Cayman/Boxster or slightly used late August. I test drove a new Boxster S last weekend and fell in love, unfortunately I can't afford that. I would like to stay under $40k if I can and want a 987 only.
I do enjoy the power in my car, the handling..overall I feel it is a great package. I do have a Honda Fit as my DD so I was looking into something a little more fun.
How would it be going from my 335 to a base 987? 5.8 0-60 is not slow at all..though the 335 is a good amount quicker. On the other hand the Boxster would handle much better (I have the sport package) and be more fun to drive. I don't need anything special, I think a base with heated seats and I'm happy.

Have you tried a Cayman S? After all it is free to try... I can not guaranty you will stay with your current love...
While it's true the Cayman isn't as fast as the 'S' model, it's still plenty of fun. Both cars come alive when you take them through the twisties. You might miss the 335 in terms of straight line power but over time, if you continue to keep the Fit as your daily driver, then even jumping into a regular Cayman will seem like quite the speed bump . Of course, if you have until the end of the year to wait...maybe the car gods will be kind and you'll find that CS's have depreciated into your 40k price range. Best of Luck!
First I owned a 987 base Boxster ... now own a Cayman S. There is no way I could go back to a base. You'll be sorry if you don't get an S.

cayman s is FAR more power than the base version, though 2.7 is a nice car and great handling and MUCH more interesting than a 335i:
my advice-go with a cayman s if you possibly can different league and nearly $90000 new here

If you are still interested in the base Cayman, let me know. I will likely be selling mine in July/August. Right now it has 7000 miles on it (I put on about a 350 miles/month). The car is excellent; I am only getting rid of to get a 911 so that both of my kids can be carted about (my youngest will be able to ride in the back of a 911 by summer).
The car is a flawless 2007 Cayman; Guards Red with Black leather interior, Bi-Xenons, heated seats, automatic climate control, Bose Premium Sound, Self-Dimming Mirrors, Starshield, etc.
Let me know if you want to try to work something out.

The 335i is a great car. Super torque delivery, turbine smooth car. Nice chassis and tossable to boot.
The Cayman is more buttoned down, and gives you better feedback. Steering is awesome. Turn in almost telepathic. A lot of that is available in the 2.7. In a way with the 2.7 you might have to work the car harder (which in itself is no bad thing). Unless on the track, around town you hardly ever get a chance to push the 3.4 Cayman S.
In the price range the Lotus Elise (but better still an Exige S) might be worth looking at. Much more raw and visceral and they dont sell well so you can get bargains on new cars and since they depreciate they are worth snapping up second hand. I bring up the Lotus because a freind attended a Lotus School in Nevada and from his description the car was excellent. The Exige S is a car I wouldnt mind adding to my garage to keep the Cayman company (but it needs money - maybe I need to work harder!)
Both cars are nor really comparable. The BMW is designed for Autobahn use, it is very comfortable for long distance drives. Also the engine is newer, and - hate to say that - at the moment better.
But, the image of the car... well I find it boring. Also the the front part is very heavy, therefore it will not allow any fun. If you wish to drive the car really fast with good results you must be a very good driver.
With the 987 it is much easier to move quickly around any curse. Also you need your brakes 2 seconds later than the BMW. Overall the 987 is by far more emotional, I guess this is due to the front weight of the car.
HBowever keep in mind Porsche is working heavily on new engines which are due to enter the market at the end of the year. The S should come with 315 and the new 7gear PDK. This would make for the -none S - around 265.

Just wondering, have you driven the new 3-series? I had an opportunity to autoX it last summer, and I drove it hard..it felt very balanced and stable, even flinging the steering back and forth at 40 (i don't like autoX because of this) Of course the 3 is no Cayman..but for what it is..I find it to have amazing handling and balance, and it doesn't really feel nose heavy. Then again..I don't have my 987 yet..
