I have many weeks before I will take delivery of my CS, which will be built by 3/18/08. I wonder: What will happen when I go to pick up my new car from the dealer? Of course, I will need to pay for my new car at that time, but what else should happen while I am there? What should I expect from my dealer? What happened when you picked up your new Cayman (S)?
Your dealer will likely offer to take you through a detailed run down of the various functions on your new Cayman ((HVAC, Audio, Nav, PASM, etc.). I declined most of the owner orientation because I had read the owners manual several times (thanks to Caymanclub download) during the 3 month lead up to taking possession.
I forgot to ask to have my doors programmed to lock automatically at 5 m.p.h. It wasn't a big deal to go back to the dealer. But, I wish I had it taken care of when I picked up the car.
It's going to be such a great day when you pick up your new Cayman. When you drive it off of the lot, that's a felling you will not soon forget.
PASM - Porsche Active Suspension Management
This active damping system offers continuous adjustment of individual damping forces based on current road conditions and driving style.
The driver can choose from two setup modes, ‘Normal’ and ‘Sport’, using a separate ‘damper’ button on the center console. ‘Normal’ mode is designed for general road driving and circuits with uneven tarmac. ‘Sport’ mode is intended for smoother track surfaces, where the harder settings help eliminate pitch and roll.
In either mode, PASM continuously evaluates the current conditions while automatically selecting the corresponding damper rates from the respective set of mapped values.
A range of sensors are used to monitor the movement of the body under acceleration, braking and cornering maneuvers, as well as on poor road surfaces. The PASM control unit then evaluates this data and modifies the damping force on each individual wheel in accordance with the selected mode. The result is a significant reduction in body movement as well as a better grip on the road.
For example: if ‘Sport’ mode is selected, the suspension is automatically set to a harder damper rating. If the quality of the track surface falls below a certain threshold, the system immediately changes to a softer rating within the ‘Sport’ setup range. When the quality of the tarmac improves once more, PASM automatically returns to the original, harder rating.

Make sure that the dealer goes to the extra trouble to clean the wheels of all Cosmoline. It is a bear to do yourself without removing the wheels.
Check the air pressure. Most often they are delivered over inflated.
Don't sign the paperwork until you are satisfied with the paint/bodywork.
Leather surfaces should all fit tight without any bulges are loose parts.
Make sure all the lights work.
If you want the doors to lock when you reach a certain speed have the dealer program that at delivery.
The key can be programmed for a longer delay time. If you want that done now is the time.
Read the manual on-line first (your can find it here) or read the sticky under complaints here. And pay attention to the delivery speech given by your sales person.
And if you stall it you must move the key all the way back to the left before restarting.
Since some clutch problems have occurred in the first few miles of ownership a 20-30 mile test drive is recommended before accepting the car. Other problem issues can be noted at this time as well.
Did any of the dealers "throw a party" for you at pick-up? You know, pictures, a cake, confetti...? How about "parting gifts" like hats, key chains, racing jackets? Anybody get an offer for free drivers training courses? Please kindly advise. THX

The Mercedes dealer was throwing a party when I picked up my wife's E320. Unfortunately it wasn't for me. Some guy had just purchased TWO SLR McLaren Roadsters.
When I picked up my Cayman I didn't want to hang around too long. I had owned a Boxster S in the past so I figured I knew the basic stuff. I just wanted to get out on the road and drive.

I bought my Cayman from Casey Parkin at Tischer Porsche and he made sure my car was perfect on delivery. I gave him my list of "settings" the week before they received my car...
- Unlocking front/rear lid: Type 1 (set to relock doors after 60 seconds)
- Automatic door locking: Type 3 (Doors lock automatically when the ignition is switched on. If doors are opened with the engine running, they lock again automatically when a speed of 3 - 6 mph (5 - 10 km/h) is exceeded.)
- Set side windows to drop slightly when rear hatch is opened. (Hatch is much easier to close.)
- Confirm the wheel alignment is checked before delivery. (My Boxster was delivered with bad alignment and the rear tires were cupped at 7K miles.)
Then at delivery we did the paperwork, Casey gave me a overview of the car's controls. I tested eyerything from lights to stereo to wipers (lifted off the windshield to prevent possible scratches). I confirmed I had the wheel lock adapter and the other items in the front trunk. My wife gave the car a full visual surface and color inspection. (We have seen a couple of Porsches where the paint on the front bumper did not match the rest of the car.)
The car was delivered in perfect condition and correctly setup. After 3 weeks and 900 miles the car is still flawless. (Nothing personal Casey, but I have no reason to come and see you!)
I made my deal over the phone Sat morning and picked up the car the same day. I got there at 2:00 in the afternoon(200 mile drive)so things were somewhat rushed. Having it to do over again I would have taken the day off and been there when they opened during a less busy weekday. I would have had my key programed , test driven the car, and asked more questions. Unfortunately, I did not find this board until after I bought my CS and I really did not know which questions to ask and what issues to address.I did not get any free stuff or photo shoots as this dealer was eager to move cars(2 dealerships worth of inventory on one lot)and I had beaten them up pretty badly in the transaction. Nobody seemed very happy. I did get a full tank of gas. Follow Sante Fe's list posted above and you should have your bases covered.

i have been treated better at volkswagen dealerships ! maybe it was just this particular dealer but i was very unimpressed with the overall buying experience .it was my first porsche and i was hoping it would be a memorable experience but i came away feeling like i since i was buying "only" a 987 and not a carrera that they could care less and were rushing me out the door .
Delivery day was awesome. When I arrived the car was in the showroom and the salesperson went over everything. It was not rushed and the best part was when they opened the door and I actually drove it out of the showroom. That has never happened with any of my other cars.
My full delivery situation is documented in some early posts on CC. But the choisest part was when, after all the hand-shaking, back-slapping, and smiles, I got in to drive away and saw that the tank was empty----flat red-light empty. The most glaring of the balls that were dropped that day. And I had to drive to another facility to have them fill it. But, lacking any other reason, I often return to visit and most of the experience was totally satisfactory.
