Simple.......Porsche can get more money for them. They judged the market and got it right. There were/are a lot of people out there (myself included) that simply wanted a mid-engined hard top from Porsche,.....not a 911 or a Boxster. They built a great car in that respect and it sells. The Boxster in all forms is a fantastic car.....I just didn't want a drop-top and was willing to pay more for the Cayman.
I am wonder why Porsche prices the coupe so much higher than the softtop Boxster, since the convertible is undoubtedly more expensive to produce?
In 2006, when Cayman first came out, it suppose to fell between Boxster and 911. In Top Gear, Jeremy Clarkson showed the chart, and it is in the middle of the two.
So Cayman should be a higher class compares to Boxster
But I just check at porsche.com, if want to buy Cayman S with 18" Boxster S Wheel, I have to pay $390!! How did that happen? It is like I have to pay more to get M3 with a 328 wheel.
Also right now, the new Boxster has the same engine, same power and same design/look. Isn't that just make Cayman the coup of Boxster?
if this is the case, how come the coup (+$3,000) is cost more than a convertible?
911 cab cost more than 911
M3 conviertible cost more than M3 coup
....
....
Will Porsche increase the performance, power..etc SOON? So Cayman can go back and stay at the middle of Boxster and 911?
thanks
Yes, Boxsters are more expensive to produce, so they introduce the Cayman and charge an expensive premium to subsidize the production of Boxster, and many of us, after considerable deliberation, decided to lend PAG a hand by buying one, but despite that, we are still a happy bunch of owners.
Yep, once again Porsche marketing proves as clever as the engineering department. Of course, as long as I own a few shares of Porsche stock, it makes me feel better.

Its Pretty Obvious . I went to the porsche Dealer to But a 911 and never heard of the Cayman bur once i saw it I felt a great passion to own it (More Than a 911) price did not matter to me I also looked at a boxster and thought .. AAHH ..no offence, but Not excited and needs a re-design ,I would rather have a 911 and I REALLY wanted The cayman and Became Obsessed with the Design. I Respect all porsches But lets be Real here The Cayman is hands down the best all around Porsche for the $$ .Convertables are for Playboys and hard tops are for the true performance Driver .
It's simple, because we are buying them. Market forces.
Was it a Mazda sports car that was launched and a few month's later Mazda dropped the price by about $5k and gave early buyers $$$ back due to very poor initial sales.

I doubt there is any subsidizing going on here... Boxsters are very profitable cars on their own, or Porsche wouldn't be selling them.
If I am not mistaken, most cayman owners are getting substantial discount off MSRP (8%+). I don't know if one can get the same magnitude of discount for a boxter.

Well we did get some discount on the Boxster, although not much, but we got some freebies, like the hardtop and colored hub caps. Dun remember what else! Still, maybe things maybe different in the US
