Performance... I'm sure many market studies were done to find out who would buy a Cayman. I bet it came down to people wanting better performance than the Boxster, but who were not quite able to afford the 911.
Kind of strange that it is the inverse of other hard vs. soft top offerings. Although I did recently notice that the Dodge Viper has the same anomaly to lesser degree. Anyone wanting a "higher" performing Viper is clearly going to be willing to pay the few thousand extra for the hard top. I'm sure it's all gravy to the Manufacturer, as well.
The Cayman must be a fairly profitable car for Porsche.
Simple.......Porsche can get more money for them. They judged the market and got it right. There were/are a lot of people out there (myself included) that simply wanted a mid-engined hard top from Porsche,.....not a 911 or a Boxster. They built a great car in that respect and it sells. The Boxster in all forms is a fantastic car.....I just didn't want a drop-top and was willing to pay more for the Cayman.
Coupes are more expensive than convertibles. See: Elise/Exige, Viper roadster/coupe, boxster/cayman etc.
Most often the coupes are cheaper. This is true for every BMW, every Mercedes, every Toyota, every Honda, every VW, every Jaguar, every Ford, every GM car... need I go on? For directly competitive cars, the BMW Z4 coupes are cheaper than the roadsters, the Corvette coupe is cheaper than the convertble, the Ferrari F430 coupe is cheaper than the Spyder, so is the Maserati, the Aston Martin... and on and on.
To answer the OP's question, the Cayman is more expensive than the Boxster because Porsche charges more. That's all there is to it.
tamtam: We're not privy to the discussions at PAG, but the Cayman S was originally marketed as an independent model that fell squarely between the Boxster S and the 997 in terms of performance and price. The '06 CS had 15 more hp than the '06 BS, but the BS was given the same power as the CS for the '07 model year, and the BS price wasn't increased to meet that of the CS.
Or maybe PAG was just trying to copy Dodge and Lotus.
i think they price the cayman in between the boxster and the 911 to sort of give a buyer an "intermediate" model to choose from in the porsche lineup .
