Porsche vs Ferrari

Looking at a new Cayman, it occurs to me that we are right where you can pick up a cherry Ferrari F355b.

In using these as a weekend only toy, it seems like the Ferrari would be the better deal. You will be able to sell it in 5 years for about what you paid for it, while with the Cayman, you will be aout 50% of the cost.

The cayman would get the nod as a daily driver.

So , which is the best choice, Cayman as a daily, or Ferrari and a beater to commute with?

Wait until something on that Ferrari breaks and the bill costs as much as a new Kia. Ferrari's hold their value because nobody actually drives them for more than 1000 miles (or less) yearly and the resale value does not take maintenance costs into account. I live in Palm Beach county and Ferraris and Lambos are fairly common and this crowd has several other cars on hand for a very good reason besides their wealth. Ferraris and Lambos are like large yachts, first thing you do when boarding is make sure it belongs to somebody else!! Porsche's success has been the ability to provide an "exotic" like experience with a maintenance and reliability record that is realistically tolerable for mere mortals of above average means, although they aren't cheap to acquire or maintain compared with vehicles design to transport rather than entertain.

<blockquote id="quote">quote:<hr id="quote" noshade="noshade" height="1" /> the resale value does not take maintenance costs into account.<hr id="quote" noshade="noshade" height="1" />If you look at used Ferrari ads they prominently mentionif a major service was done recently. At around $6,000 for a tune up every 15,000 miles or 5 years you better figure the cost of maintenance into your calculations. Myexperience confirms what Dave said about these cars being driven about 1,000 miles a year. If you want garage art that you drive occasionally, you can't do much better than a Ferrari. If you want a car to drive, you can't do much better than a Porsche.<o></o>
The other consideration would be how will the performance of a F335 compare to a Cayman S? I was just driving next to a 360 Modena in my Audi S4 and in highway roll on acceleration I kept right on his tail. I would think a Cayman S would leave an F335 for dead in the straights and the twisties. Of course, if the F335 feels anything like the 550 Maranello I drove, the X-Factor of the carcould more than make up for its lessthan cutting edge performance depending on your priorities.<o></o>
I have a friend in LA (lives in 90210) who has a F360/F1... beautiful car, he even let me do Mulholland Drive one day in it, and I had a great time. with 17k miles on the clock it needed a new clutch = $12,000. He now has the car on consignment at BH Ferrari, and picked up a 2006 CarreraS cab at Circle Porsche in Long Beach.

The famous symbol of the Ferrari race team is a black prancing horse on yellow shield-shaped background, usually with the letters S F for Scuderia Ferrari, and with three stripes of the Italian national colors green-white-red on top. The road cars have a rectangular badge on the front hood (see picture below).

Curiously, a similar black horse on a yellow shield is the Coat of Arms of the German city of Stuttgart. This name is derived from Stutengarten, an ancient form of the modern German word Gest&uuml;t, which translates into English as stud farm and into Italian as scuderia. Stuttgart, called Stoccarda by the Italians, is the home of Mercedes-Benz and Ferrari's rival Porsche, which also uses the Stuttgart sign in its corporate logo, centered in the emblem of the state of W&uuml;rttemberg (see flag below) just like the city is placed within the state.

[Above Right] Arms of the Free-state W&uuml;rttemberg (1922-1933) and State W&uuml;rttemberg-Hohenzollern (1945-1952).
