My Cayman S is in the shop for a couple problems and I've been driving a base 997 for two days. Some thoughts.
The car "feels" much faster than my Cayman S. I know statistically the cars are the same speed but I'm amazed at how much faster the 997 feels. Also, it doesn't seem to handle worse than my car, just differently. I don't know which I like better; I'm looking forward to getting my car back for a comparison. One thing for sure, the Cayman S to me looks better. But other than that, the 997 might be the better car. Thoughts anyone?
PS one thing for sure, the cars both have that "Porsche" feel.
I went and drove a 997S a few months back just to see what I should plan for when I'm done with my Cs. I found that it seemed very heavy and "floated" down the road. My car feels much more like a scalpel and with a few performance mods, almost as fast. I was really hoping that the 997S would give me the same feeling plus some. I'd like to try a GT3 to see what it feels like at some point. I think it makes more sense than a 997 with an x51 anyway.

The car feels faster due to mid-range TQ. It probably is faster when you aren't really getting into it. Around town, my 335i also feels much faster despite virtually identical acceleration numbers in a straight line.
Look at the upcoming Softronic flash/plenum for impressive mid-range TQ gains.
Plenum
The plenum is the piece that goes between the Cayman throttle body and the intake runners. The factory piece is a long black plastic tube with a divider down the middle. There are aftermarket replacements which are designed to allow the air to flow easier/faster into the engine and increase horsepower and torque.
Softronic
SOFTRONIC produces DME programming and hardware to suit your companies specifications. Our current software suite is a complex matched set of programs housed in a Flash Manager and Flash Client. This software is matched with two cables, an End User and Master Cable. The SOFTRONIC proprietary flashing solution outperforms all other combinations in speed and accuracy including the factory Porsche equipment.
It will be interesting to see how the new softronic software/plenum changes the TQ curve...if it is as good as advertised, your problems might be solved.

Ken: I agree with your observation. That's the difference Porsche wants us to notice when we test drive them both. The 997 has more hp/torque, slightly lower gearing, and the engine sits right over the drive wheels. Even the 300hp 996 feels like it accelerates quicker than the CS. The 997 also handles quite well, in spite of its out-back engine. Maybe you'd better not drive the 997S.

I left my friend's 996 Cab in the dust from a rolling start. He was stunned.
Not even close.
Out on a track you feel the real difference when you throttle steer and trail brake. Rear hangers are fun to drive when you learn how.
Only a GT3 would drag me out of my CS. All of the others are too "GranTurismo."

You're one of the most knowledgable porsche guys here brad, so it's good to get your imput. I have to admit, I like driving the 997 a lot! I'm still driving it as my car is still in the shop. I do realise that it doesn't corner as well as my cayman s but it is pretty cool to hammer out of corners in it. I can't figure out why I like driving it so much; is it because it's different from my car or is it because I like it better? One thing for sure, even though it costs about the same as my Cayman S, it feels more expensive. I feel like the car is worth the money, where in my car I've always felt that it was overpriced.
