I know it's just my opinion, but I saw an R8 on the highway a short while ago and I think it's a great looking sports car, except that alternate color band behind the doors. It just looks ugly (IMHO) and really detracts from the lines of the car. After seeing the car on the road, I actually went to the Audi site to see what color combinations were available (ie, body color, band color) and just didn't care for any of them. I think that design `touch' ruins what is otherwise a smokin hot looking car...esp. for Audi!

And let me clarify.. I believe that I will probably end up choosing my supercharged, "do much of it myself", CS .. over the super beautiful, imaginative, luxurious, and ultra sophisticated Audi R8. I think when I finish, my S/C Porsche CS will be a better super hi performance sports car than anything under $200,000.00 can buy, for ME; and me alone! And it will cost less than half that price. And it won't grab so much attention.
I will wait to decide until I can test them both on a track on the same day. ... Unfortunately, my serious GF is falling in love with the R8. (*Gulp) Life is always full of the unexpected.
sdiver68, wouldn't the majority of the World's population also make the same argument to you about your own purchase of a Porsche CS?
I would suggest comparing a Porsche Turbo purchase to the Audi R8 at about the same price. After driving both, I would bet that 8 out of 10 people would instantly choose the R8, even tho it is a bit slower. The R8 is really such a superior car.
And I have never heard anyone in any professional GTR review state that the the Nissan GTR is a superior car to the R8. Many people would certainly prefer the GTR for special performance reasons... But superior?
No, I don't think knowledgeable people would say that about the CS. What's the competition for comparable performance abilities? Corvette, Subaru Sti, Mitsu Evo, 335i, 135i, Elise/Exige, Z4M???...each has their strengths and weaknesses in the category. And if "they" did say that, that's no skin off my back, I hope they are happy with their choice. I can tell you from personal experience that the more CS's that show up at track events, the more credibility they are getting from all types of enthusiasts.
The R8 is chosen as superior to the 911 in most direct comparisons I've read, about even to the 911TT or GT3, which are both inferior to the GT-R lap times at the track...at some tracks very inferior. So yes I am extrapolating a bit but its an easy extrapolation to make since as you compare the R8 to the 911TT the GT-R is compared to the 911TT and Z06 in many comparisons (not to mention the Gallardo, Ferrari, and others)
Personally, I think 5 in 10 would take the 911TT or GT3 over the R8.
You have personal experience with the R8, I do not. I'm sure it is a great car but $115K+ worth of great? I'd want my $115K to be able to handle a Z06, a CS GT, and the GT-R at the track. But that's just my personal opinion for what I want in a car...obviously Audi is selling all the R8's they make

Lifes too short. If I had the ability right now to get an MSRP R8, the CS would be gone. I love my CS, but the R8 is just so cool and magical from what I have read.
Facing somewhat the same problem Cold Croc, might I suggest you consider spending what is comparatively, vis-a-vis the cost of of the R8, little coin, take two days off and traipse on out to Infineon / Sears Point Raceway in California and run an R8 for an extended "test drive" on the track?
That's what I'm going to do this coming Monday. Good news, if you go with the car, it should solve, albeit in a rather expensive fashion, all Cayman S issues with lack of LSD, and why didn't Porsche give us more bhp like the 997's got?
BTW, I went through somewhat the same experiece as you with respect to ordering the car. I got a call late Friday afternoon in January while in Vail sking to offer me a spot to order a car. One difference however, i didn't even know I was on a list for one. The Sales manager explained he had my name on a list of people "interested" in an R8; I was about the 10th or so person on the list; that I was the first person he had been able to reach by phone; that the order spot would go to the first "yes" + a deposit; and finally would I like the car? One catch, in order to keep their allocation slot, the order had to be placed by 5PM the following Monday, so "could we like do this, pick a color, options etc., over the phone." I innitially declined to place the order, but latter reconsidered. We put the order in that Monday before the 5PM deadline. The car is supposed to be a Week 13 build, estimated May delivery. FWIW, I visited the factory in Neckalsrum in February to look at the build process ~ these are in most every sense of the words "hand build" cars.
Cheers, mike
LSD - Limited Slip Differential
A limited slip differential (LSD) is a modified or derived type of differential gear arrangement that allows for some difference in rotational velocity of the output shafts, but does not allow the difference in speed to increase beyond a preset amount. In an automobile, such limited slip differentials are sometimes used in place of a standard differential, where they convey certain dynamic advantages, at the expense of greater complexity.
The main advantage of a limited slip differential is found by considering the case of a standard (or "open") differential where one wheel has no contact with the ground at all. In such a case, the contacting wheel will remain stationary, and the non-contacting wheel will rotate freely– the torque transmitted will be equal at both wheels, but will not exceed the threshold of torque needed to move the vehicle, thus the vehicle will remain stationary. In everyday use on typical roads, such a situation is very unlikely, and so a normal differential suffices. For more demanding use however, such as driving off-road, or for high performance vehicles, such a state of affairs is undesirable, and the LSD can be employed to deal with it. By limiting the velocity difference between a pair of driven wheels, useful torque can be transmitted as long as there is some friction available on at least one of the wheels.

mipor, I thought I would be envious of you and a R8 running the track at Sears Point. But I just finished three days in my R8 at Miller Motorsports Track in Tooele, Utah. This track is an amazing world class facility!! If anyone gets the opportunity to run your car at this facility, do yourself a great favor and do it.
BTW there were a couple of Porsche GT3's and an S and a Turbo and a Cayman S, along with Derek Bell's World Champ Audi S4 race car,... and 5 new Audi R8's.
All of the instructors who drove an R8, including even one guy who races professionally for Porsche in ALMS, swore complete allegiance to the R8's superiority in almost all phases of track work. One swore all day everyday how he would not rest until he possessed his own R8. ( Tho he may have been a bit touched to start with )
After driving the car on the road, I liked the car very much. But after tracking the car,.. Well, on a track, this car is truly in its element. Its real aggressive spirit cannot be seen on any normal roadway.
Remember, this current R8 is just the first generation of this R8 line. The R8 V10 should be on the road in a year with all of the research benefits of having the R8 being used within the public domain for over a year.
The only reason that this car doesn't have Porsche throwing away the 911 completely this year, is the R8's very limited production size. With the new Nissan coming, the 911 I think will finally be finished. I am only happy because then we will see the 911;s replacement!!

April 2008 issue of "Car" ran a comparison test of M3, Porsche Turbo, R8 and Nissan GTR. Their conclusion was that the GTR beats all of them both on UK roads and track. Worth reading even if not every one may agree with them.
