I've had too many friends say "never again" on Audi's due to thier reliability issues and the dealers. Maybe in Europe, Audi is considered a premium brand, but in the US they do not enjoy that and are pretty much considered to be upscale VWs.
I saw an R8 on the road once and it was a beautiful car and I'm sure it is a tremendous performer; however, I just don't see Audi surpassing BMW and Mercedes without some serious work to differentiate their mainstream cars (A4, A6) cars from VWs. Even the Audi dealers where I live are right next to VW dealerships...that's just silly!
I beginning to wonder if Audi is making so few of their specialty cars (R8, RS6, RS4) available in the US because they are losing money on them and think doing this will help them sell more A6s and A8s. Look at Nissan, the GTR is obviously fabulous, but do you think they are going to start stealing market share from BMW and Mercedes because of it?
I'm really not trying to bash Audi, it's just very frustrating to me to have followed them for so many years and they appear to still think they can compete by applying the same formula. If they want to make a dent in BMW or Mercedes, they need to step up and put the dealer network in place to provide a similar experience that BMW and Mercedes owners get, stop making FWD cars and make lots of high perfrmance ones to compete with the M's and AMGs. Even in Colorado, you see 10 "AMGs" to every 1 "S" from Audi and this is probably one of Audis biggest markets.
Sorry if this is a rant, but I really think Audi can become much bigger in the US if they really want to. Maybe the coffers at Porsche can help!
Infiniti has already stolen market share from BMW and Mercedes. GT-R derived technologies will only enhance their position.
So why isn't it an Inifinti GT-R? We will see, but I suspect the GT-R will be just like the RS lines from Audi, great cars, few sent to the US, purely a marketing exercise, and ultimately a non-profitable car...fabulous, but not-profitable.
Looks: The R8 is FANTASTIC. Parked next to the CS it becomes a little more obvious that Porsche is a bit more retro styled. Its interior is modern and build quality is perfect. Its looks like it costs a million bucks.
Visibility: Roof is lower and not as good as the CS. Rear pillars chop the view as well. Bit more of an enclosed feeling. Lack of rear vision is made up with excellent rear view camera system.
Driver position: Shifter position is not as good as the CS and a bit higher up, due to the 4WD transmission tunnel. All other positions are good.
Engine Performance: Better than stock CS (obviously). Almost identical to my 300+ RWHP modified CS. Engine sounds good, not like your normal V8 however. Screaming for a better more grunty exhaust system but as stock is composed and smooth. Upcoming V10 will give it the power to make it a super car.
Handling: Very powerful brakes. I little over servoed IMO compared to the CS. Steering is good and connected but the CS is still better for ultimate feel and accuracy.
Porsche should be really worried about this car, its a winner!

I hope I'm wrong, because I LOVE the competition!
Actually. I am quite unhappy that Carlos Ghosn switched the GT-R from Infiniti to Nissan I have a relationship with a large Infiniti dealership and was promised first crack at 1. When Ghosn made the surprise announcement, Infiniti dealers WERE ticked.
Ghosn's reasoning was that he wanted it to be a "World Car" and flagship for the parent company. AFAIK, Infiniti only exists as a US marketing badge, including our 51st state Canada and our labor pool to the South
Rumor has it that Infiniti will get a super coupe of some sort based on the GT-R, and the next iteration of their current line-up will feature GT-R technologies.
In that light, the GT-R will be immensely profitable to Nissan, as was the 959 for Porsche by setting the direction and technologies for future 911's.
Hey guys, there are already many good threads started for the GT-R. Its definitely worthy of great debate, but lets keep the info and discussions focused so that it can easily be resourced in the future.
I was just talking to a dealer about the R8 (Rockville Porsche/Audi) this week and I mentioned availability of the R8 and he laughed and quite seriously said that he has a four year supply already on order (four years based on his allocation). Is this for real? If so, I would not even be considering letting go of my R8 order, if I had one already committed to me! Also, If I had to put a deposit down and wait four years I would selection another high end car!

Actually, ever since we burned down the White House in the 1800's we've just let you guys think you're independent! Next step since we've got you so addicted to oil is to turn off the taps and phone all the Mexicans to go home. Then your economy will totally tank, reducing the value of all the Porsche's to give away level - the two hundred year plan will then be complete! Four more years to go!
A stock R8 will have a factory warranty, everything is well-engineered to work together, and it s/b relatively reliable.
You can't say that same about CS w/ forced induction, engine transplant, and other expensive mods to close the gap. Additionally, that mod money is pissed away w/ regards to resale value. Not saying mods are a bad idea, but the choice between a stock R8 and a modded CS would be an easy one for me.
Now you went and spoiled it all by bringing in objectivity and common sense. When did that become part of the equation?

Ha, ha I knew that would get a reaction from at least 1 of our esteemed Canadian members

Canada is the USA's teen-aged daughter.
She lives in her parents house, so she can spend 100 percent of her checks from her job at the mall on things like "all-you-can-eat" free health care, and signs in French and English.
