Question Daily Driving Fun/Involvement

Hi Everyone-

This my first post, so first of all, thanks for all the great info on this site.

I am strongly considering buying a Cayman S and I took a test drive today. Obviously, it is a great performance car, but my question after driving it is, how fun and involving is it to drive on a daily basis?

My basis of comparison is a 2001 Miata (supercharged), which is a ton of fun and involving to drive on a daily basis - eg, to the grocery store- given its relatively low HP, good grip, etc.

Clearly, the CS is a great car (far superior to a Miata), and must be a blast to drive on track days, empty mountain roads, etc. However, it seemed so "easy" to drive and its limits/capabilities are so high, I am wondering if it's fun and involving to drive on a daily basis.

Opinions please - thanks!

Shaun

I think it is a good every day driver. Lots of feedback at the wheel. The suspension is tight. It goes where you point it. Funny thing is that it's laid back enough you can relax into it, but when you want more it does wake up and it runs with you.

I cant compare it to a Miata but it reminds me of my tuned E36 M3, but is more refined.

Hope that helps.

I have 28,000 miles on my 06 and use it as my only car. I have no complaints except maybe picking up 40 bags of mulch from Home depot. Other than that you can do just about all the shopping you need with both trunks. It really can handle a lot of stuff. It even holds my fishing poles in it very good. I see no problem with a daily driver what so ever. Drew

thanks...I agree it will be a sound, practical daily driver --- but has it been "fun" for you on a daily basis, buzzing around town, etc? Do you feel it's a "Fun" daily driver as opposed to a car that is practical but maybe a bit boring as a daily driver but great on a track day?

I think it's fun on a daily basis. It's been said before, but, plenty of feedback, lots of power on tap, the feel of being glued to the road, all while being a practical car. Can't beat it!

I have a stock '91 Miata and I have to say in city driving the Miata can be more fun. As an example there is an entry ramp near me that I can go hard onto in 2nd gear , go around the 270 degree curve , grab 3rd and pop onto the highway at 75mph with a big smile on my face. When I do the same thing in my CS I hit the highway at 95 which increases the pucker factor but makes it less likely that I push the CS in traffic out of fear of getting a major ticket. That being said, I am not giving up the CS for anything. I have started doing DEs and a 30 minute session on the track is the most fun I can have with my clothes on! A weekend DE provides more driving pleasure than a year of street driving.

Any car that is a move up in acceleration becomes harder to enjoy in daily driving. It has been said many times that it is more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow.

I suggest you test drive a Cayman and make your own mind up but beware, it can be hard to go back.

One of the things I really like about this car is that you don't have to be driving it at 9/10th or 10/10th to enjoy the driving experience. The way it responds even to minor steering corrections, the wonderful engine sounds, the immediate response to small throttle inputs, the precision of the gearshift, the feel of the brakes, the tight yet comfortable suspension all make this car a lot of fun and very involving to drive on a daily basis. I've been commuting to work with it every day and I look for any excuse I can to take the car out.

great input, thanks...I think your slow car/fast, fast car/slow comment is spot on. Your comments about DE events are helpful, b/c I plan to start doing those...good news is, the Miata is worth so little now, I can keep it, even if I get the CS - best of both worlds, hopefully!

My wife and I have had thirty some cars/trucks/SUVs since 1968. IMHO four of them have been fun daily drivers - a Fiat 124 Spyder, a Miata, a Boxster and the Cayman that I am driving now. I never get bored driving my Cayman.

If you like driving an incredibly well-appointed super-powered go-kart, day in, day out, well, then the Cayman is the daily driver for you. If you want to be bored out of your mind on your commutes see another automobile manufacturer.
