I live in Taiwan Taipei. The terrific here is just horrible, Extremely bad. So everybody drives automatic here. ( of course there are some car enthusiast who drives stick ) I am thinking to pick up my friend 06 Cayman S like new condition. Fully loaded with navi, pasm, sport chrono, sport seats, 19" wheel and only 9k miles on it. But it's a Tiptronic. Or I can order a 335i coupe. Let me make this simple. The price of this 06 vs 08 will be very similar. I am always a fan of BMW. But I am also a 996 owner currently. I love Porsches I know all the new cars will release their dual clutch system next year and I am sure it will all smoke stick shifts. But sticks are fun to drive. ( prices will be high and I have to wait a while ) If I am going to order I will get the stick, sport seats, iDrive and black roof. Anyway, What do you guys think?
cayman s
handles better
unique in design
slower
less practical
nothing much to increase power
automatic for daily I'm sure it's no brainier
it's a Porsche, no substitute
335i coupe
handles pretty well
easy to tune
practical
low key
E90 is everywhere so as E92
at the end it's only a 3er not even a M3
Any inputs will be great! :cool!:
PASM - Porsche Active Suspension Management
This active damping system offers continuous adjustment of individual damping forces based on current road conditions and driving style.
The driver can choose from two setup modes, ‘Normal’ and ‘Sport’, using a separate ‘damper’ button on the center console. ‘Normal’ mode is designed for general road driving and circuits with uneven tarmac. ‘Sport’ mode is intended for smoother track surfaces, where the harder settings help eliminate pitch and roll.
In either mode, PASM continuously evaluates the current conditions while automatically selecting the corresponding damper rates from the respective set of mapped values.
A range of sensors are used to monitor the movement of the body under acceleration, braking and cornering maneuvers, as well as on poor road surfaces. The PASM control unit then evaluates this data and modifies the damping force on each individual wheel in accordance with the selected mode. The result is a significant reduction in body movement as well as a better grip on the road.
For example: if ‘Sport’ mode is selected, the suspension is automatically set to a harder damper rating. If the quality of the track surface falls below a certain threshold, the system immediately changes to a softer rating within the ‘Sport’ setup range. When the quality of the tarmac improves once more, PASM automatically returns to the original, harder rating.

Sport Chrono and Chrono Plus
This optional package is a valuable addition for trackday use. Available in conjunction with the CDR-24 CD radio, it includes a swivel-mounted analog and digital timer unit which is centrally located on the dashboard. All functions are easily accessible via the control stalk for the on-board computer. Analog dials measure hours, minutes and seconds, while a separate digital field displays whole seconds, tenths and one hundredths of a second. A second digital display runs in parallel in the instrument cluster. Click this Link to visit the FAQ entry for Sport Chrono.
if you want practicality: bimmer
if you want to drive: porsche, there is no substitute. i have had e30m3, e36m3, e46m3, e90 (not m3), other than the e30m3, it's not even remotely close.

I am quote concern about the tiptronic on the cayman. PDK will smoke it. My guess is it won't be out until 09/10 face lift cayman. The price will be very high for a new car which is out of my budget. So my guess is having a tip cs is better than nothing. What do you think of E90?
when i was getting a new car, i had the same choices, either cayman or 335. but are you not sure about getting a cayman or 335 or are you not sure about getting a stick or automatic? i'm kinda confused by your thread.
anyways, i've lived in taipei before and i think it's a hard decision to make.
if you want "faster", better looking interior, 2 extra seats then go with the 335.
if you want "fun to drive" get the cayman. trust me.
A Cayman S is every bit as fast as a 335i coupe, unless you are comparing tip in Cayman to stick in 335i. As others have pointed out you need to buy what is best for your needs.

Yeah, that's why I am so anal about getting a stick or not. I'm more toward to a stick car also more towards to a cayman s. The thing is there's none cayman s here unless I factory order. (Expensive as hell and out of my budget) It's just my parents are pretty against me driving a Porsche.

Let me make it simple. If you going to drive a sports car, you will want a stick. I bought a new automatic 2000 C5 Corvette because I used it as a daily driver during the summer in bad traffic. During all those seven years I thought about how much I wished I had a stick. When it came time to replace my Corvette, I knew I had to have a stick. So when I bought my new CS an automatic transmission was never even a consideration. Now I happily row through the gears in any traffic and love it.

your parents? if they are a factor in your buying decision, then you should probably just take the metro.
Ah, c'mon clubbers! What type of answer is 'depends what you need'. Jeez, what is this, Consumers Reports?!
This is the Cayman Club. The answer is 'get the Cayman'. Common sense, logic, fancies, leanings, attractions, etc have not a thing to do with this decision. Get the Cayman. If you want to hear 'get the 335' go to a Bimmer forum. If you want logic, like I said 'Consumer Reports'. And they will probably go 'neither, get a 1968 Mercedes 5 cylinder diesel'. Get a Cayman!
