If others think I'm a snob because I own a Porsche then that's their problem. It could not be further from the truth.
Ordinary guy, from working class family who can't really afford the car but thanks to family support have the good fortune to drive something that makes me smile every day. I work hard and this is my reward.
We cannot get away from the fact, especially in So Cal, that many Porsche owners do so because of the kudos, status and statement of wealth a Porsche represents. Unfortunately some will always place all Porsche owners in the same bracket.
As for me, I couldn't care less what others think, I know the truth.
but its not really up to the individal to determine whether its snoobish or not, you can't deny that porsche has built it self on this platform and use its name to sell their cars. the idea that "Most people who do not appreciate a Porsche cannot afford one" seem to re-enforce this view of "our cars discrimates because we can't".
it might suprise you to know that porsche was founded with the priciples to make sports cars that everyone can afford and use.
if you truly believe its not an snob item, then you shouldn't feel paying for it as 'wasteful'
Oh boy.
Maybe if you read my post more carefully you would see that I am simply saying that often (generalizing here....and yes I know THAT is not a good thing to do) those who cannot afford an item, simply choose not to look deeper into it, and therefore fail to give (in this case the example is a Porsche) the item even an inkling of a chance to earn their appreciation. THAT is where a lot of the snobiush attitude is created....by the VIEWER who think the person is a snob, not by the accused snob!
Your response is just such an example. You are assuming that I think my car is wasteful by my comments when in reality I was merely responding to your comments and using the value as an example of how people look at expensive items when they do not actually own them. I actually think the Cayman is the BEST value for a sports car in the world. No I am not joking. Tell me how that figures into me thinking my car is wasteful?
You say determination is not up to the individual? BAahahahah I disagree. It is determined by every individual. YOU are th one who thinks a Porsche owner is a snob my addmittance of the intialization of this thread. The R8 owner above was accused of being a snob...by an individual driving down a road! The accuser had no knowledge of the person and yet goes online to accuse Bodhil of being a snob after a 5 minute exposure from 10 feet away! Laughable.
The funny thing about the R8 story is that if he had done what the accuser wanted.....by looking at him and waving....you know in some cases the person driving the sedan would have said "that guy is looking at us...just to see if we are checking out his ride.....what a SNOB!"
The snob factor is based IMO purely on individuals perception.
Another note: Porsche built itself on a name to sell cars. Umm YEAH. So did Ford, Chevy, GM....etc. I sell services everyday based on my name. Thats how business works. The difference is that if one cannot deliver, your name will get you no where. Porsche obviously excells at sports cars. So does Ferraris, so does Nissan, so does Ford (GT-40), etc. They all excel, they all SALE cars. Its up to the INDIVIDUAL to discriminate as to what he/she wants to afford.
Meanwhile there will always be haters. I dislike people who talk on their cell phones put on speaker phone in public....that does not make me call them snobs. There will never be a day when we are all satisfied.
No need to wear teflon underwear but no way this website is anything like the fanboi civic sites, etc. that are out there. I've seen lots of posts from people comparing the Cayman to something else and 99%+ of the responses from our members are very civil and informative and generally helpful. If someone comes in just to troll then they may receive a harsher response but that is pretty rare here.
I might quibble a bit over the 99%+ number but I largely agree with you. In fact, I explored and abandoned several other Porsche-centric forums before discovering this one - abandoned them specifically because of the elitist attitude worn on their sleeves. I was absolutely thrilled by the overwhelmingly "performance enthusiast" makeup of the contributors here and I plan to stick around for a while regardless of whether I end up geting a Cayman precisely because of the civil & knowledgable tone of the forum.
My real point (and I admit I hyperpolized a little with the fanboi comparison) is that the Porsche community does have a reputation of elitist snobbery and, unfortunately, that reputation is not baseless. It is nothing like the Lambo crowd or the M-series mob but there are more than a few Porsche owners who wear their car as a status symbol rather than drive their car as a fun personal experience. Having read thousands of Cayman Club posts in the last week or so, my personal perception is that a few of them are here, too - very few, thankfully!
My $.02 - buy what you like, don't worry about what others think. You'll never be able to please everyone, and will go nuts trying to do so.
I have friends w/ much more expensive cars, so owning a Cayman is nothing to be too proud about. It's just a really fun, beautiful toy. I understand the Porsche image and aspects that make it special, but in all honesty plenty of other cars at diff. price points would make me happy as well - C6, GT-R, S2000, 135/335, M3, etc.

I think like others here, I definitely didn't buy my car simply for the snob appeal. I am your typical average working joe who's been dreaming of Ferrari's for as long as I can remember. I've always been taught to never buy more than I can afford. Ten years ago, I bought my very first car, then about four years after that I had considered looking to replace it, my mother's car broke down on her. So instead of buying a car for myself, I bought her a new one (till this day, probably the proudest moment of my life).
Then about three years ago, I was ready to buy another one but figured a house would be a better investment. So last month it finally happened. After 10 years of owning my car, I upgraded. I did look at a BMW first but decided I liked the Porsche much better. Although I don't think I'm being snobby, I do feel better that I find that there are less Porsche's in the streets than the BMW I was going to purchase. But then again, I'm in Miami, so 911's, Ferrari's and Lamborghini's are a dime a dozen. In other words, even if I was trying, I doubt people willl notice the cayman when I'm driving on Ocean Drive next to Ferrari's.
The day I took home my car, I called up my friend and gave him the keys so he could enjoy the car as much as I did. People saw the new car in the gym and I answer whatever question they may have. In fact, I'm actually very careful not to sound snobbish. The only question I pause on is the price. I never know if it's proper to mention price.
My point is, I bought the best car I could afford for the time being because I've always been into cars. I'm still convinced I will get to own a Ferrari one day. But for now, I'm very happy with the Cayman. And I stopped caring what the other people at my new job whisper about me and how I spend my money because it means that they don't know me at all.
Last night I was surfing Audi websites to hear more about the R8,( one of which, along with my CS, I am lucky enough to own for a couple of more months). On this one web site,.. (very poor web design BTW), I came across a R8 thread labeled "R8 Snobbery." I expected to see a story of how some up-scale city 'Slick Willy' type person, went out of his way to be very rude and condescending to a good, and well meaning person.
Boy was I surprised when I immediately recognized myself as being this guy's idea of R8 Snob! I had just finished another track session at Miller Motorsport in Utah and I was returning to my home in Ketchum Idaho.
I can only apologize, but honestly I didn't notice the guy, and I just never notice any sedan type cars of any manufacture unless they have a light bar on their roof. I do notice sports cars and GT cars. I was so amazed to see myself characterized as a snob! LOL.. I don't even have any good friends who make six digit incomes! And I only own two suits! I've always been a serious outdoor sports type person. Super high quality, excessive life styles are not my style except in cars, women and animals, and yet I found myself being the main subject in a SNOB thread. Too funny.
Hmmm. I saw an S4 heading north out of Salt Lake that evening. I wonder if that was them. I think that was about the time a million small bugs coated my windshield and I had to pull off at a gas station to clean them off so I could see out. And of course I saw your R8 filling up my mirrors earlier that day at the track!
I'd say the snobbishness was in the other guy's head: "I've just bought an S4. Clearly everyone must take notice of me!"
In my case, the Porsche name has been tops in my mind ever since I was a teenager, due primarily to Porsche's racing involvement. But my admiration of the Porsche name is from an engineering and racing perspective, not from a price and exclusivity point of view. So for me the nameplate was undoubtedly an influence, but it was the test drive that sold the car.
As for snobbishness, just the opposite: frankly sometimes it seems a little embarassing to me to have spent so much on the car. But hey, I wanted the car, and it costs what it costs. And you can't really worry about the opinions of others. As the Ricky Nelson song says: You can't please everyone, so you've got to please yourself.
Has any of you seen that 997 carrera commercial in which that little kid sees the 997 rolling by while in class?! Well I love that commercial, simply because this is just me, a kid who really liked Porsche, ever since I was like 4 years old, I'm sure at least one of you knows what I'm talking about!!
Now, while I appreciate Porsche more for its quality standards, performance, etc... these are not what mainly attract me, its that childhood dream! That's the reason why although I appreciate some other cars (R8 being one of them ) I'd take a Porsche over any car, any day of the week, and I rarely am fair/unbiased when comparing Porsche to any other "material possession", and that is also why I still want to get a 911 someday (although I now appreciate the benefits of the midengine platform and wouldn't let the Boxster go easily). If people associate that with being a snob, its their problem, not mine!
Go on now, call me crazy or childish

A good car will get you from point A to point B. A great car... will just get you into trouble!
I actually Get more bad or hard looks and Negative comments from people that own high end cars likeInfinity, Acura, BMW ,Mercedes, and Especially AUDI owners .I dont know what is with Audi owners here in WA but they seem very angry and somewhat jealous of my Cayman and they never smile or wave they ushally try and race me and look so pissed off .Maybe someone can explain this AUDI owners HARD ON for porsche owners ? This is my first Porsche so this is all new to me But I am really enjoying all the Modding we can do to our cars and I think the snobbery is the attitude you protray to other people so I just smile and wave and that ushally clears all that up .I am just like everyone else but I am just a Car freak . Dave007 +1 On the in love with my Cayman
Do I consider myself a snob? No. In my part of the world it is quite common for folks to drive gigantic SUVs. Yukon Denalis, Escalades, Expeditions, Hummers, etc..... No one is calling them snobs. Yet if you compared fuel, insurance and depreciation costs, in the long term it would cost me more to own a big SUV than it would to own my Cayman S.
+1 Alot of these SUV's cost more than a Cayman S. It's a matter of perception by people that don't know this fact that causes them to think we spent much more on these cars . . .hence we're seen by them as snobs.
In "my part of the world" there are not alot of Cayman S. There are lots of high end Porsches, Lambos, Ferrari's, etc. Perhaps they perceive me to be a tightwad!
