For the rear wiper, no its not necessary and you my have a hard time finding a car with it on. For some reason the rain doesn't sit on the hatch.
Finally, as others have said, if your looking 2 years from now, its pointless to look around now. For one thing, you have no idea of the price increases in two years. Your target for buying a 2 year old car? $40K? might be way off base if their are large price increase in MY09 and MY10. You don't know the new prices with the value of the dollar dropping. In two years, a new CS stripped could be $70K MSRP. As to the car interior thing. If your worried about that, I'd got buy that Infiniti. Your lucky you get cup holders in a P-car (not joking here, they are a recent invention). Many people will tell you the top of the line Bose system is terrible. I will tell you the Nav is terrible ... POS.
IMO, the car is meant to be driven. Its a sportscar at its soul. It's meant for listening to the sweet flat 6 behind your ear. It's not meant for worrying about how the interior looks. I have the Bose and added XM. I can also say I never (as in never) have the radio on because when I drive ... and I drive. I listen to the engine, the exhaust, the road, the cars around me. If your looking for luxury, IMO, look elsewhere
YMMV
BTW, my wife had a 96 Eclipse Turbo. That car was a toy in comparison to the CS. There is no comparison. It was a nice car but I wouldn't be proud about being able to compete with a 6 cylinder Mustang.
I too shopped both of these cars extensively. I think the Infiniti is a very cool looking car. Funny the op is concerned about the motor noise in the CS. I think the exhaust note in the G37s is one of it's strongest points. Personal preference I guess. As far as the interior goes I loved all the creature comforts in the G. Seats were great but the dash material looked too much like the plastic in my SUV. Nothing special there. As for the driving experience? While it did seem to have plenty of grunt I found the transmission to be frustrating. Maybe it's me but I just couldn't get the thing to shift smoothly. The CS is clearly the most fun I have ever had driving a car...ever. The G is a great looking car but they're everywhere. You won't turn many heads unless you really pimp out the G. With the Cayman S you won't make it off the lot without women throwing their phone numbers at you (some guys too!). By the way, I think $36K sounds a little low for a G37S.
Like alot of people here I will tell you that you should go with your heart. After 6K miles in 6 months I haven't regretted one minute of ownership.
What's the obsession w/ # of cylinders? C6 Vettes usually get better hwy fuel economy than S2000's.
There are so many other variables that you can have a relatively fuel efficient V8, or a gas guzzling 4 cylinder (i.e. STi or Evo). Cylinder count is a non-factor when I buy a car. Now a street bike, that's different - they have to be v-twins!

I don't get it. Why would you want to know the turning circle?
I tend to glaze over when people talk about how many storage bins a car has etc. Just not what interests me.
But if you want a sports car - why get meaningless specs adding confusion to your decision process. Just drive it!
Drive them all first, if at all possible. Then if your inclined (and I think you are), go thru the specs that you feel matter. Read reviews etc etc. There is certainly a wealth of information on this site. But it will make a lot more sense, if you drive the car first and get your own sense of her.
Tell me this. Would you marry a girl because I told she's really good?

I should mention (and you'd appreciate this if you drive them), that standard 911's are more comfortable and feel more luxurious not to mention quieter than a Cayman. Actually the Boxster is more comfortable and quieter than the Cayman too.
The CS is all about driving and a bit of refinement. But I wouldn't call it luxurious (unless your Colin Chapman).

+1. Although my CS is more comfortable than my '92 911 was, different times different cars, I certainly wouldn't describe it as a luxury car.
I continue to struggle with the selection of cars folks often chose to compare against each other. I just don't see these two cars as competitors unless you're focused on 0-60 times. which may or may not be close. Personality wise these guys are very different not to mention the price gap.
In addition, I just cannot even begin to think about what I'll be driving in two years, there are so many variables.

I can honestly say I hate the look of the G thing. But I'm only going off the picture, might be much nicer in the flesh.
Actually to be honest I didn't like the look of the Cayman from some angles, at first. Butt (sic) it grew on me :>
Whilst I think they're probably quite different cars. I would n't blame anyone for cross shopping all sorts of things. I seriously considered an M3. It's not hugely similar, but is fun to drive and pushes a lot of my buttons.
I also looked at a Lotus Exige S. That's going a bit in the other direction, but again pushed lots of my buttons. A little hard as a DD though.

I don't blame for cross shopping, I just struggle with some of the comparisons and choices, they are often completely different types IMHO.
Personally when the time comes for a change I review what's available, what I can afford and what my priorities are. Then I draw up a short list of competitors that meet those and any other criteria I may have.
When shopping for the CS I did consider the Lotus but didn't test drive as I had heard enough to let me know it just wasn't what I needed.
I have driven many nice and performance oriented cars therefore I had a basis on which to place my decision. When I drove the CS it was all over for me.
I agonized over cars for about six months. It is not a price question for me. It is a value question. Just because I can afford a new CS4 doesn't mean that I would go out and buy one. Spending that much money on a car - from an emotional standpoint for me - is obscene. I just don't need the bling to feel good about myself. I don't give a damn about girls (or guys) giving me their numbers, because I am married to a total hottie.
The G37S won and I drove both quite a bit. I bought a demo for half of the Cayman S. In the end, I need a vehicle that is comfortable for a few hours to a few days at a time. I might drive 45 minutes from our town to visit a client, or I might drive two days to visit a client and pack the fly fishing gear. Come September - when I hunt 3 to 4 days per week - the hunting vehicle takes over.
The G37S is more comfortable on the highway, I can take / make a call with integrated Bluetooth, and I can still throw it around on curves. Is it a Porsche (and I have owned a few)? No - but spending another $35K to get a Porsche would just be to satisfy my ego, have people look at me and go, "Wow - nice car!" but I am so not into that, and neither are the cultures that I have built my businesses on.

I agree. Its as silly as cross shopping a CS to a Z car. Two entirely different target markets but hey ... to each their own.
I can honestly say I hate the look of the G thing. But I'm only going off the picture, might be much nicer in the flesh.
You should take a look at one in person. It has a beautiful stance. I think Infiniti did a really nice job on the new body.

You're right. You shouldn't buy a car to impress people. You should buy a car because it's the one that worked for you. I have a question for you though; are you telling me that nobody said, "nice car" when they saw your G37s? I mean it's not a Ferrari, but it's a nice car and something NEW.
And you shouldn't assume that all Cayman owner's bought their car because it was flashy and needed to pull broads. I'm sure some people bought it because they actually loved that car. If I had wanted to impress people I would have bought an F430 or and R8, (Oh, man the R8 is beautiful) but then people would assume I was driving my daddy's car. In the end I bought the car that worked for me and that I wanted, just like you did with your G37. Gotta love that exhaust note, yeah?
