i personaly lean towards the cayman. its shorter length will be an advantage in traffic. also the power to weight ration i think goes to the cayman, correct me if i am wrong.
The M3 2006 weighs 3415 pounds and is a 3.2 litre 333 HP. Its 0-60 is clocked at 5 sec. If we take R&T's perfprmance specs for the Cayman at 4.8 sec 0-60 the Cayman wins, and if the road is not straight the Cayman wins even more.
I'm not sure whether this issue had been discussed.
But, if stock Cayman were to race with a stock M3, which one will win? considered on a road that has a lot of traffic and not a straight line race.

Since the same driver cannot be in both cars as they race, the outcome in this case (in traffic) will alsways depend on the driver and his/her experience.
Must magazines have clocked the M3 0-60 at 4.8. That is also the official BMWNA number. I have also read in a few reviews that the M3 takes the Cayman in the higher revs in the straights. It's the AUTOCAR article posted here recently that said the M3 was faster with the Comp package than a Cayman around the track (the one with the RS4 and the SLK). It was very close though.
Now as far as steering feel and other highlights that is another story. I currently have an M3 but am awaiting my Cayman so no mean no disrespect.
A stock M3 feels a little lifeless and uninvolved. But add an intake, proper exhaust and some better rubber and it is a whole different experience. I look forward to driving them back to back immensely.

I think it would be close anyway you look at it, however I have heard several M3 owners say that their M3 felt more powerful than their Cayman S. I didn't have an M3, but a 330CI and I would car how fast it was, it would never be a Porsche.
I loved my BMW's, but I really got tired of seeing my exact car (black with tan converible) several times a day driving down the same street as me I would say common would be an understatement. I love this car not just because of the performance and looks, but because I don't see them everywhere I go.
My 2 cents: I've owned them both and have owned a number of other M cars as well, and the M3 has the sheer power that the Cayman does not. But the M3 is not nearly as involving as is the Cayman. It is not a sports car in the same manner. The M3 is indeed one of the best sports sedans money can buy, but it doesn't have the feel, or invoke any passion in the driver. In the Cayman vs the M3, I feel like I give up sheer grunt, for finesse, accuracy and a big smile on my face. What I can't stand is the Porsche salesman who pans the BMW - clearly it is an great car! But if this salesman could only state it correctly and not defensively, we all know the Cayman is the car we'd rather own. Cheers.
If it was me, I'd head for the turns & curves...sure to win then!

The Cayman turned in the same time as the M5 around Top Gear's track with the Stig at the wheel. The M3 was a bit slower....

I must say that I've seen the Cayman timed at 4.8 secin 0-60 in only one magazine, Road & Track. Most other sources go as high as 5.2 sec, which is Porsche's figure. So as much as I like it to be the norm, Iwould consider 4.8 sec the exception and not the norm. Probably 5 sec is more realistic, still being an optimistic figure.
Any even comparison of these cars in a one time event must be made under the assumption that both drivers are the same. Otherwise, how can you evaluate, which is technically superior. You could get a race car driver in a Honda S2000 and smoke my teenage daughter in a Cayman. Does that make the S2000 superior? Of course if you were to do multiple races around the same course with similarly experienced drivers, you could yield reliable data that way.
