I picked up my new Boxster RS60 yesterday - gorgeous.
Before that I first owned a Cayman S, then a 911 C2S. Having driven all three, I'm pretty clear on my favourite...well at least the one that comes last and it might surprise you.
I won't go on about every last detail, just the things that marks one out from the other:
First up the Cayman S:
- The tighter chassis is immediately obvious compared to the RS60
- The looks - I think the Cayman is without doubt better looking from almost all angles than any of the 3. Only the 911 has it from the full rear view
- The practicality - a clear winner
The 911 C2S
- Iconic yes, but it really isn't as good looking. I didn't spend much time taking in the curves compared to the others
- The engine is very strong...in my opinion for non track use, too much. You constantly have to reign it back in instead of pushing it like the other two
- The
sports exhaust is the most amazing sound and beats the 987 by a mile for the sound track. I really miss this aspect
- The cabin is a very special place...but getting back in the 987 reminded me how much I missed the forward view - the curve of the front wing is so much nicer than the flat 911
- The more you spend the more it depreciates and it did. I lost 17k in 12 months
RS60
- For me, the difference is fun and versatility of a soft top vs the tightness of the chassis and a better side profile of the Cayman
- The new exhaust is very nice. Nothing like as loud as I would have liked, but better than standard Cayman/Box
- 4k less on a standard Boxster S vs Cayman and have a soft top - well I wont go in to that debate, but it is nice to be able to drop the top
- If you have owned a Cayman and want a change the RS60 is perfect - so many unique touches.
- One of the reasons I got this car was because its limited edition and with the facelift coming I wanted something that might hold its value a little better than a standard BoxS. In any case, I don't actually like the facelift
- My Cayman was arctic, the 911 black and GT Silver on the RS60 is stunning. It seems to change hue depending on the light, darker to lighter. Love it! It's actually worth the money
Final verdict, well the 911 is last. Not as good looking, less sharp around corners and too expensive in all respects.
Second place. Tricky. The RS60 marks it out as something different, its got practicality, a soft top and a great engine - the Cayman is better looking.
Maybe the best way I can answer this is which car will I get next...a Cayman S!
