I've been stalking this board and test driving Cayman's and pretty much had my mind made up to buy one when one of my friends approached me about buying his car because he knew I was looking to buy a Porsche. He has a 2003 C4S which he said he would sell to me for 50k? It has only 14k miles and I know he has taken very good care of the car and it has never been tracked. I know I'm gonna get biased opinions from you guys but: What would you guys do? More importantly: Why?
The C4S is a great car.......the first thing you need to do is drive it and the Cayman right next to each other.....pursuethe one that feels best in your hands and looks 'right' in your mind. Also remember that the C4S will be coming to the end of its warranty period sometime soon........and Porsches are pretty expensive to repair. As good as the 996s were, they are beginning to look a bit dated now IMO.
Drive both. Get the one you want. If your driving on the road most of the time either is good. If you are looking towards some drivers ed or track experience then the cayman may be a better choice.I have had a few different porsches and the cayman gives me the most feedback of any that I have driven. The more I drive it the more I like it. Either way you win because they are all great cars and an awesome experience.
Even IF the C4S was a better car. And even IF the C4S was less epensive. And even IF the C4S was trouble free. It still isn't a Cayman S. It won't LOOK the same or DRIVE the same.
So, if were just looking to get a Porsche, the rule is to get the best example, in the best condition, for the money that you can afford.
If, on the other hand, you were set on the exclusivity of a Cayman S... then that's a different story.
I know from experience tha the Cayman can easily be an everyday ride, in that it is non-laboring in any aspect of operation. It makes going to work fun. In fact, I can say, having had other Porsches, that it makes going ANYWHERE more fun.

Cayman S - a portable amusement park

Hi Homer,
Two things. Purely Porsche GT just compared the C4S to the Cayman in this months issue. It might be in the archives on articles. One writer preferred the C4S, one the Cayman. I think the exterior of the C4S is great! The interior definately goes to the Cayman. Also, K-Man S use to own a C4S, so perhaps send him a PM. The price sounds right though. Maybe you can get an extended warranty.
The biggest concern for me would be warranty. The C4S is a really nice car, and would be very hard for me to resist, BUT.......I think I would always wish I had got the Cayman. You could always buy the C4S and sell it later if you had any regrets, but I would probably stick with my original plan.

Three letters: RMS Check it out. These cars had problematic Rear Main Seals. If the car is going off warranty soon and you get stuck with a leaky RMS you will rue the day your 'friend' offered you this deal. And, definitely sit in both cars. The difference of the interiors, assuming there are no leaks in the engine bay, would sway my decision.
I've owned both cars and both are great cars, as others have said it will come down to the little things (and warranty) that will make the difference, drive both, spend time with both and then decide. I'm surprised the C4S has fallen so far in price I seem to recall my 2003 C4S had a sticker price of over 90K! to drop almost in half over 3 years seems like a lot to me.
