Love the Cayman but it's just a stepping stone to a real Porsche (911).

I'll stick with the Cayman with it's engine in the right place.
No, I do not want a 911. I am quite happy with what I have. The 911 is a great car and I am sure those that own them enjoy them. I fell in love with the Cayman S when I first saw it, just a great looking car. I never thought the 911 was / is that great looking, my apologies to any 911 owners out there.

No, I don't want a 911, but I do want a Cayman version of the GT3/RS. I guess that is what the aftermarket is for since it can't be done from the factory. I'm really happy with my current transformation towards a Cayman RS.

Every track is different, but I'm only .1-.2 seconds slower than 911s(not the S). Even GT3 drivers, when they ride with me, are impressed by how well the Cayman S rear end stays glued to the road. Value for the $, the Cayman S was right for me.
While I agree the green GT3 RS is about the coolest thing I've ever seen.
The engine is in the wrong place.
You take the GT3 RS engine, seats, abs, 305s
and put them in a Cayman and you have something so much better.
Nice thoughts, except that the car you describe does not exist off the assembly line. Sure you might be able to cobble it together, but I am not a car builder and I have not the time or desire to build it myself.
So the day that the car you describe is offered is the day I will place a deposit! Listen up Dr. Porsche.....there is a mint to be made!
"And yes, it would be nice if Porsche offered a truely mega-performance mid engined car to replace the 911... they wouldn't even have to call it "son of cayman"... D"
Porshe did offer a mega performance mid engined car, the called it the Carrera GT! Note, they built their super car with the engine in the middle
I just sold my corvette and am looking at P cars so I am doing alot of lurking on this forum. I have not found a good 911 forum yet. I really like the look of the cayman s but after i option one out im close to a carerra. I believe the test drive will decide it for me but like most of us here, I have friends telling me to get the real porsche.... I always get what I want but I think hearing this all the time will get to me unless im really sure. Thanks for the great forum.
you guys need a forum set up like corvetteforum.com. All in one
There are so many variables involved here, it's really kind of meaningless. It all gets down to a personal decision. I owned an '06 997S, and C5 and C6 ZO6's before the Cayman S. If I were still doing as many track events as in the past, I would take the ZO6 over either Porsche without hesitation. For me, the Cayman is a better all around sports car, driven primarily on the street, with 4 or 5 DE events each year. Yeah, it needs a bit more power (well, maybe more), but the mid-engine car simply handles better than the rear engine layout.
Could have bought a base 911 Carrera (or a new M3, Z4M, etc), no problem. Chose the Cayman without any hesitation, it just looks beautiful, fantastic chassis, mid-engined, pure and rewarding. Class. As many others the GT3 would be the only 911 that would sway me, that fantastic engine alone... but that was out of my price league so no problems. With my CS I envy no man!
Like a few others here, I came from a 911 - in my case a Midnight Blue 996 with RoW M030 suspension and a few other goodies. Honestly, I prefer my new C 2.7 for the life I lead, where my car is principally a daily driver with 4-6 trackdays per year. I haven't much missed the power of the 3.6 so far (though that may change when when I do hit the track), and I'm finding the Cayman to be a much more intuitive drive.
Also, I think the delicate look of the C is reminiscent of early Porsches, so for me it's a stepping stone to when I have the time/space/energy/funds to run two cars, one of which will probably be a Jag XF, and the other a 68-72 911.
I never owned a 911; however after taking the Porsche Sport Driving school twice now and being able to drive the two cars in succession, I can say I'm happier driving my CS than a 911 it just feels better (to me).
