Cayman S VS. New Lexus GS 450 H

I decided to hold off on my Cayman Purchase to take a look at the new LEXUS GS450 H (Hybrid). Blew away a 911 in speed test - 350 horsepower 0-60 in 5.5 sec - 30 MPG City w/ MSRP of 57,000 (add Nav & Mark Levinson Stereo MSRP is 62,000).

I saw one today & unlike the Cayman - every single option I could think of on the Cayman build - XENON, FULL LEATHER, BLUE TOOTH, HEATED SEATS - all included.

I know the two cars are different BUT - for pure value, luxary, preformance, gas mileage, etc. and my current IS 300 - Lexus might build the best car on the planet.

Well, one is a luxury sedan wrapped in silky smooth leather.

The other is a beast of unadulterated sin, wrapped in silky smooth leather.

A 911 Carrera is sub 5 sec 0-60. A Cayman Sdoes 0-60 in 5.1.

You may be right about value, luxury and gas mileage, but there is no way that any Lexus is going to out do a Cayman or 911 inoverallperformance.

kab,

I just read an article about the GS450H and it is very impressive, but for me that would be my second car. If I was going to go back to a sedan I would probably get the new M3 or M5. Hard to compare anything with a Porsche' total package, and I am talking mainly talking about the driving experience.

How do you measure one against the other? In my opinion there is only one choice. And then there is this!

It is a question like 'do you prefer a screwdriver or a hammer'. Two very different tools to use for two very different purposes. One of each would be the correct answer....

There is just something about a back seat that appeals to some people.

I think the Lexus is impressive compared to the BMW M and Mercedes AMG in terms of both value and performance. Even if I didn't own or want to own a Porsche I wouldn't compare any Porsche sports car (ie excluding Cayenne or Panamera when it appears) to any BMW, MB, or Lexus, different species.

I'd get both if you have the money

The Lexus would be used on days that I just don't feel like doing my own shifting,
fighting with traffic, hauling around the family, using the extra luggage space for
long road trips, etc...

I'd get the Cayman if I can only get one because that's what my heart tells me.

Very nice carbut like many have said....you are comparing apples and oranges.

And there is no way in hell that car is going to out perform a 911 or a Cayman S.

Again - I would never even try to compare the two cars - there is no comparison... But the more you look into the over pricing of the Cayman and it's options - I would be up to close to 80,000 to add all the extras that come standard on the new Lexus GS450H.

Strange post! Comparing a luxury sport saloon with a sport car!

Anyway, the following is my shortlist when I considered buying the cayman:

Nissan 350z (2006 model with more power)---problem with badge, very good value!!!

Audi TT 3.2l---New model coming out! Its everywhere in London!

Porsche 996 3.6l Second hand-----Prev owner might be a lunatic

BWW Z4 coupe M-----already got an M3

Mercedes SLK AMG-------Very close buying this-Only if they do a manual gearbox! Actually put a deposit down as well!

Lotus Exige S-----too extreme; reliable?

Now I got my Cayman for 3 months, no regret! What a great car!

What other cars are you guys thinking about buying before you decide to go for the Cayman?

If you are looking for value, meaning the quantity of "something" (HP,options, gizmos, etc.) for the amount of money paid, forget about Porsche entirely. There is no word for "value" in the Porsche lexicon. They tried that a long time ago with a car called the 914 and it ended up labelled a VW-porsche in Europe and a wannabe Porsche in the US of A. Porsche tried to find the word again with a car called the 924, and it needed an Audi engine to spell value, also DOA. It's successors, the 944 became a true Porsche (i.e. poor value) and some variants were more expensive than the 911 of the times. True Porsche customers are all masochists to some degree, knowing that they are paying way too much by "reasonable" standards of automobile pricing, but unable to satisfy themselves with anything else. This is unfortunately true because the feeling they get behind the wheel isn't like anything else they've driven. So it's a form of addiction, irrational, exceeding expensive and without value except for the pleasure it conveys. At least it's not illegal.....yet.
