M3 19

I've searched around but I can't find any specific posts about this question. Just wondering for those who have moved over from the E46 M3 to the Cayman, how would you compare the suspension of the M3 with 19' wheels to a Cayman with PASM (normal or sport mode) and 19' rims?

I had an M3 with 19s and now have a Caymen with 19s + pasm. To me the ride quality feels a justbit softer with the Caymen when pasm is on normal mode compared to the M3. When in sport modethe Caymenis definatly harsher than the M3 was.

I too moved from an E46 M3 with 19" to a Cayman with PASM and 19". I agree with the previous posts. For what it's worth, I abolutely love the feel of the Cayman suspension. In the 800 miles I've put on the car, I have come to really appreciate the PASM as well: harsh when I want it that way and smooth when I'm tired. Kind of neat to be able to change the character of the car with the press of a button. I haven't tracked the car yet but plan to (then again, I never took my M3 to the track so I really have nothing to compare against).

I also had M3 with 19s. Normal mode is softer but still with better control. Sport is much harder. Cayman wins hands down.

Here's my highly scientific data:

Mode Wife Ride Complaint Factor (10.0 = 'won't ride in car')

2002 E46 M3 Cabw/19's9.2

Cayman (PASM normal) 2.1

Cayman (PASM sport) Don't even go there....

That is bloody hilarious

Spot on tho, my wife really dislikes the ride of the M3 with 19' rims. The SMG gearbox actually makes it feel worse, so we're really looking forward to the new car (only 2 weeks to go!)

JamesDS:

It's probably not news to you, but you are really going to love this car. Hopefully you'll get yours in time for some beautiful May and June weather there... My wife actually looks forward to fast country drives now. As noted, it is really nice to be able to entirely change the character of the carwith a push of the button.

I have the M3 with Vogtland Sport Springs....and 19's...since 03...been with Porsche for over a year.... The standard suspension on all Porsche's I find to be more comfortable than a standard M3 suspension... Also, lets not even talk about how much better the Cayman handles...

SO it seems I need PASM after reading this tread... maybe even more so since it will be my daily driver...

You guys really feel a big difference between the two settings of normal and sport?

Oh yes. But nothing is better than a test drive.

Here's what I'd do:

1. Find your favorite local road that causes a 9.2 Wife Ride Complaint Factor in your M3. I drive a 3-block long road just like this every day, and actually find it difficult to speak when in my M3.
2. Drive to your dealer and test drive a Cayman w/ PASM
3. Drive it on the previously identified road in both Normal and Sport mode

On my own 9.2 road, I find Normal to be super plush compared to the M3, and Sport to be comparable to the M3 but perhaps a notch easier.
