Cayman S vs. '07 Boxster S performance?

Hi All-

I was curious about what the expected 0 - 60mph performance of the newly configured '07 Boxster S vs. the Cayman S will be. The '06 Boxster S transmission's 1st and 2nd gears are lower (higher numerical) than the Cayman S transmission (3.67 & 2.05 vs. 3.31 & 1.95) which will provide a bit more torque multiplication. I would expect the higher torque multiplication factor to provide a little better standing start performance. One thing I don't know is how the final drive ratios of the two cars compare. I could not find this data point and obviously this will be a large factor in the final multiplier.

Will Porsche use the existing '06 Boxster S transmission ratios in the '07 implementation? Or will they use the 'enhanced' Cayman S ratios? Does anyone know why the Cayman S transmission was reconfigured with the different ratios? Was this done to truly offer a better performing car or was this done to further 'protect' the position of the base 911?

Just curious,

The shorter gear ratio will compensate partlythe fact that the boxster weigh more than the cayman. The only performance difference( Same driver)will be on a bumpy race track which I thinka similarly equip cayman s will lapmarginally faster. (Lower weight, thicker anti-roll bars, stifferand better drag co-efficient)

For normal driving and average driver, I don't think there will be any noticeable difference!!

Should be about the same. The Porsche press release says the new Boxster S can do 0-100km in 5.4 seconds, .1 seconds faster than the old Boxster S.

But that's a 0-100km time. For 0-60mph, the Porsche web site says the Boxster S can do 0-60 in 5.2 seconds. So the new one should be able to do it in 5.1 seconds, which is the same as the Cayman S.

Also keep in mind that Porsche may use the same gearing for both cars now since the original statement was that the gearing in the Cayman was a better match for the 3.4L engine, and also as a cost-savings measure for Porsche to reduce the number of parts. I would expect the trannies to be the same now too.

I suspect you're correct, Ken... the lower gearing was specifically for the Boxster S's 3.2L because it lacked the low-end torque without VarioCam+.

Boxster remains at 5.4sec.

Cayman at 5.1sec.

Aren't roadsters far less aerodynamic than coupes?

They sure are. But that effect does not kick in until at least 80mph and not significantly until 100mph+.

Reply to another post: Why would the new Boxster S' weight go up? The engine block isn't any heavier (if anything it is lighter since more metal is removed to increase the bore). The heads may weigh slightly more, but were talking negligible amounts. I'd say the '07 987S will be within 10lbs of the '06 987S (from engine changes). I have no idea if the Cayman exhaust, tranny, etc are heavier than what the '06 Boxster had assuming they thorw that stuff in.But even then they can't much heavier if at all.

Logical way to go. Saves them on cost and still price their cars the same. More profit.

Could the weight diff. be due to the convert. top's additional weight...We all know that asolid roofwanes in the weight catagory when compared (beansfor bullets) to the convert.'s top and the materials needed to create the open-roof vehicle.

The Cayman has a higher final drive than the 987S so the overall gearing in all 6 gears is numerically higher than the Boxster S, although much lower than the Carrera.

FWIW, here's a comparison of gearing for theCayman S, 987S & 997.
