Having come from A 986 Boxster S, I'd be interested to know if there's many doing/having done the same move? Are you pleased with the differences the Cayman offers? Do you miss the roof (or lack of)? Did the extra power make a lot of difference? Do you wish you'd have gone for something more powerful?
dans: I had a 2.7 986 Boxster and 2 different 3.2 987 Boxster S cars. I can assure you that the driving experience is completely different with the Cayman S. It's a proper racer and shape of the cabin and fixed roof creates a resonance from the 3.4L engine that defies belief.
The car is more taut and rigid than the 987 Boxster S and looks far more masculine. Of course, the interior is the same as a 987 Boxster but the driving experience is a world apart, for me at least.

Hope that helps.
I agree with these sentiments exactly and I've owned 2 prior Boxsters including the 987S version. I can turn faster lap times in DE and faster runs in Autox with the Cayman S.
BTW, we will NOT be discussing Porsche's decision to put the 3.4L into the Boxster in this thread, if that starts up here, this thread will get locked, there is another place to discuss that topic and it has been beaten to death by now. Let's stay on topic here and answer the question that was asked. Thanks!

Yes, but you're dwelling on the past. That may all change when the the 'new' Boxster S comes on the scene.
When the 'new' Boxster S comes out I won't be buying one because I like the Cayman S better. That doesn't mean the 'new' Boxster S isn't a fine car, it certainly will be. I still doubt it could turn as good of lap times and I still doubt that it will sound the same as a Cayman S does since there is a nice reverberation inside the coupe shell of the Cayman that you simply don't get in a Boxster S, even the 'new' one. It all comes down to what do you want to buy a coupe or a convertible.
The question was whether or not I am pleased with what the Cayman S offers as opposed to the Boxster S, even the 'new' one? The answer is YES. I want a coupe, not a convertible, I want all of the things I get with the coupe that I don't with the convertible. I'm certain that others who choose the Boxster old or new will be pleased with their choice as well, but for me the choice is CAYMAN!
This is an interesting question. I can't imagine buying a convertible if you prefer a coupe or vice-versa. If you prefer an open-top car, the Cayman won't do it for you. The Cayman has given coupe-preferring Boxster owners a choice they didn't have before. Both are great cars. No surprise, since they're 95% the same.
I agree with all -- much stiffer and more responsive than my '00 Boxster S, but then the technology is 6 years newer. Think Porsche will offer a Targa or a T Roof? I know it will add more weight and maybe more flex, but at least it would save the $4k to keep replacing the soft top every 3-5 years for those who like to look at the stars at night!
I'm coming from a 2000 Boxter S. I liked it much more in handling and balance than the 99 Carrera it replaced. I've chosen the Cayman S (1) Because of my experience owning the Boxter S (2) because of the Oh So Sexy styling. (Does ANY vehicle short of an older Ferrari GTO look better?) (3) Performance including extra efficient dry sump and Variocam 'huge' torque band gotta love that engine and transmission. Did I mention one of the finest transmissions ever fitted to a production car.
Turns out I rarely enjoyed driving with the top downespecially at high rates of speed he he he. I like the outdoors well enough, I just prefer to not have the sun beating down on me when I'm driving.
I am being soooooooo patient while all you current drivers are all out theregoin' 'YeeeeeHaaaaaa' like you are riding a bull named Fu Man Chu. I shall be rewarded for my patience.
Dans, my last car was a 986Sand asides the handling & performance differences I am not missing the roof down option (my previous two cars, Z3M and Z4, we both convertible). In the UK how many days are there when we can get the roof down? On long journeys after about 20 minutes you end up with ear ache and with the weather over the last few days (in excess of 30 degrees) it would of been way too hot unless travelling at speed or having the roof down and aircon on.
