Frazer, where did you find a BMW 335i to test drive? My understanding is that they are not out yet!

also, i have to say, as much as i like bmw's...the 2006 330i felt and drive a LOT like my 1995 325i coupe. honestly, i really didn't feel much of a difference. maybe i'm crazy--it's a great drive and a great ride, and i like bmw's..but was never thrilled with service or reliability

BMWs are fine automobiles and I'm a proud owner of one. As far as service and reliability goes, every car company has their fair share of it, even Porsche.

I drove past a black BMW 335i in testing disguise today in Orange County freeway traffic. It has a pair of substantial tail pipes.

While returning from Croctoberfest, while driving through BMW country (Spartenburg, SC), I had inadvertently passed a shiny new BMW. I was traveling at or maybe a little faster than traffic, faster than the BMW but not very fast. Well, when the BMW driver saw me, he immediately engaged in pursuit and found a position right behind me. It was clear that he felt that my presence would provide him with a good hunting opportunity and a chance to somehow verify his belief that his car could take my CS. From my mirror, the BMW looked big. I figured it was a 5 series or something, but was not intimidated. There were many cars on the road and I am not the type to engage in street races, so I ignored him.

He was pretty much tailgating me so after a while I pulled right and let him by. Then I ended up driving behind him for a while, but not necessarily in the same lane. Once behind him I could see that it was actually a 335i. Once in front of me, he was getting on my nerves because he kept slowing me down. I stayed in the left lane most of the time, cruise control engaged at about 9 over the limit, and every time circumstances would have me possibly passing him (remember, my cruise is on) he would slam the door by yanking in front of me, causing me to have to cancel my cruise control. It really aggravates me when someone is racing my cruise.

Some time later the BMW had yanked in front of me for the last time. The road was now two lanes and we were in the country. I canceled the cruise again, now behind him and we are overtaking a slower car in the right lane. In front of us, nothing but straight open road for as far as the eye can see. No cars, no places for speed traps, just a long stretch of straight. After passing the slower car, the BMW goes right, once again looking for that opportunity to prove something. This time, I dropped down to third and let the Borla scream. I went by him like a missile before he realized it was on and could react (can you say Turbo lag). Then he laid into the BMW for everything it had. But there was no use. Though the 335i put up a good fight, the CS persistently walked away and at a pretty good clip. After all of wushushu's ramblings, I figured the 335i would have put up a stronger fight, but the CS pretty much annihilated the BMW propelling me (and a lot of cargo/passenger weight) 15+ car lengths ahead before I let off, and it was clear that the BMW was really trying.

After that, once again with my cruise control set at about 9 over, the BMW driver pulled up on my right and gave me a thumbs up, then vanished behind me. Perhaps he was just curious how that experiment would turn out, or maybe he expected to take me, I can't say. But I can say that both he and I now know how these cars stack up against each other on the highway.

tisk, tisk, tick. for a guy who doesnt condone street racing, sounds like you did your fair share right there, and at speeds prob well over 100. if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck...
not that i got that out of the way, a stock cayman S vs a stock 335 clearly and unequivically is a fight where the 335 is fighting a losing battle. its clear that that car was stock because a tuned 335 would easily pull a cayman S with an exhaust/software/intake. my 335 had an agressive tune, full catback exhaust, BBS wheels, and custom air filter and was quite fast, but that didnt make up for the overall boring driving experience (except when really getting on it).

Indeed. Shame on me. I will neither confirm or deny your claims.

I have shared this experience because we have a member who insists that a stock 335I coupe is faster than a Cayman S in a straight line. Believe me, there is no contest. My CS slaughtered that 335ic, in a straight line. OK, my car is not 100% stock, but not far from it (catback exhaust only).

i dont have any problem with you sharing the experience, (as its appropriate for the situation), but dont actlike youve never raced and say shame on me when the only difference between my (one and only ever posted) video and your experience is the one is recorded, the other is not, save for you prob having gone 30-40 mph faster. i hope you see how hypicrital it was, and thats why i pointed it out.
now, letting the past be the past...i agree a cayman S is better in every statistcal way than a 335. i should know, i owned one. a stock cayman S will easily pull a stock 335 from any gear at any speed. the 335 has a serious lack of top end, when it is stock...thats not so much the case when modded, but on the stock car, it is.
