Cayman S vs. BMW 335i

<div>First, let me say as a long time BMW owner, I realize the Cayman S is a better car overall and more exclusive. I currently own a BMW, and am looking to buy my next car andhave a BMW 335i twin turbo on order. For those of you who arent familiar with it, the BMW 335 is a new twin-turbo coupe coming out with 300 HP and 300 lbs/torque. When I spec it outmy 335i the way I want it, the MSRP is 48k and change. Anyone now who is ordering Navigation on it however, is delayed 3 months, so even with the #1 allocation spot at my dealer, instead of getting it in September now, I won't get it for another 5 to 5 1/2 months (in December at some point).</div>
<div></div>
<div>Here's my dilemma:

On Autotrader, there are a lot of 2006 Cayman S's listed in the 58k to 61k range, most slightly used with 200 to 6000 miles with decent options. I'm sure you could get them for about 2-3k less than what they list on there I would think, and the supply of them on dealership lots seem to be going up fast for Caymans (tell me if Im wrong here, but most posts seem to indicate this). I would guess that in 5-6 months, they will sell for 5-7k less than what they are selling for now as they seem to be depreciating at a good pace and dealers seem to be givingsteep discounts on them now.

So, in 5-6k months, you can pick up a 2007 BMW 335i for 46k to 48k, brand new. OR, you can pick up a slightly used, but 2006 Cayman S, with low miles probably 1000 to 7000 miles, for 50 to 52k (do you guys think this is possibe? It seems like right now, you could get one for 56k to 60k, so in 5-6 months, I have to think you could get one for 50k to 60k, especially with the 2007s then coming out). Im not talking a fully loaded Cayman S b/c it seems like you can price these to all hell with 15k+ in options if you wanted. I'm talking what most people get, maybe something like Preferred Package (or maybe Preferred Package Plus), Xenon's, Sport Chrono, maybe PCM. So the basic, but important, options.

The carshave almost the same exact horsepower, the 335i has about 50 more lbs of torque, but the Cayman S weighs 600 lbs less. 0-60 for the Cayman S has most tests doing it in 4.8 to 5.0 seconds, the initialBMW published tests for the335i is 5.3 seconds, but BMW always underestimates times, soI bet it hits 5.15 to 5.2 in real world tests.

Which do you buy? Do you get the 2007 335i brand new, or do you get a 2006 Cayman S used but still a 2006 with very low miles? Essentially a Cayman S will be about 4k to 5k more. And you'll have less warranty left, maybe 6 months / 5000 miles off the warranty since it will be slightly used.

Also, assume you don't need rear seats (I'm single and dont have any kids).</div>
<div></div>
<div>I realize this is a Cayman forum so Im likely to get all Cayman S-biased responses, but humor me anyway. I'm posting the same thing on a BMW board I frequent. Also, no suggestions to get a regular Cayman, the HP will be too low and it will be way tooslow for my taste.

Thoughts, everyone? I'm debating whether to go through with my 335i order or wait till December and buy a Cayman S (since I wouldnt get either car until then, anyway). I'm starting to wonder if just waiting, paying 5k more and having a little less warranty left and essentially buying a 2006 with under 5k miles is a better deal. Or,get the new2007 BMW 335 twin turbo so its a newer model year, clearly less sporty and less exclusive than the Cayman S, but has backseats IF I ever need them, and is ALMOST as fast and with a full warranty rather than several months gone off a used one, and has some cool new technology/features/design, but is lesssporty and less exclusive and likely not crossshopped as much (normallythe newZ4M coupe or Z4M roadster would be, but I have a Z3 now, so keeping those 2out of my equation and think Id preferthe Cayman S over the Z4M coupe).</div>
<div></div>
<div>Anyway, let me know your thoughts. Thanks in advance!</div>

You might just be overthinking this thing. Your analysis covered most points except the big one. Emotion. What do you really want to enjoy? I think if you can answer that you will make the best decision for you.

Here's my advice, contact Woodhouse Porsche one of our sponsors, I know he has a lightly used Cayman S on the his lot with something like 1500 miles on it that qualified for and received the Porsche Certified used car warranty of 6 years and 60,000 miles, which is BETTER than the new car warranty! I don't know what kind of deal you can strike on it, but I'm sure less than new and your warranty will be better, AND you'll get to enjoy the car for 6 months before you would possibly be getting the BMW in December.

These are really 2 different cars you are talking about, one is a sports car, the other is regular car with a souped up motor via turbos. 0-60 times mean nothing in traffic or on the track so they are a poor indicator of performance and driveability but unfortunately are what people often focus on because that's what is in the marketing materials. The Cayman isn't for everyone so I suggest you go drive one and if you like it and it suits you then seek out the best deal from someone like Woodhouse. If you don't like it then get the BMW I'm sure it will be a nice, albeit different, car.

I was thinking about the same. Cayman s will still be much better car to drive ( I think!). But the 335 has the engine block as the current M3 so expect some serious performance. More over Xenons, leather, 18 inch are standard now ( i guess semi-power seats too!!??). S0 for around 46-47 u can load it up to the brim!

thanks for bringing up this issue...i totally forgot to collect my deposit back!!!! time to go back to the BMW dealer. I had a 330ci for 2 yrs, put 45k miles on it and proved to bethe best car to own. i had replaced every part on the car for free under the maintainance package!!! (abused this car like ****...never shifted till i hit the red line!)

Exactly

I love BMW and have owned a couple and the new 335Ci is going to be a great car - if you can get over the new body style that is

IMHO the E46 was one of the most beautiful, purposeful, and classic designs ever. The new designs just don't hold up i'm afraid. I still love BMW's - just not the way they look.

Tracer: I've had an E-36 M3, a Z-4, and have been responsible for my son's E-46 M3 and my bro-in-law's 540 and 545. In my experience the BMW full maintenance and servicing for four years is essential because of service issues. I've enjoyed the BMW's but I'm a little gun shy getting a new BMW in their first model year. I've got an 07 Cayman S on order but I am unclear of the service needs, but I can say that the BMW's I've had acquaintance were needy with regards to maintenance and repairs.

The Ultimate coverage is a huge benefit of owning a BMW, I agree. Kudos to BMW for not dropping their plan like Mercedes and Audi did.

I'd wait and drive the BMW when it's available. The Cayman S will still beavailable with the discount that seems to be the major 'leveler' of your playing field.

If we were to have a conversation it could last an hour, but I can't do that much typing.

I have a 330Ci that has been a fantastic car. It's performance on the street is all that I need to keep me off the hood of a police cruiser with handcuffs on.

Question? Do you realize how big this new coupe is going to be? It will be much easier to seat 4 if you have a need for that which I don't. This car is going to feel way bigger than a Cayman in everyday driving. You mentioned that this car is not usually cross-shopped with the Cayman and that's because the 335 is going to be even more of a GT than the Ci was. I think these are two very different cars. The Cayman is a much better feeling sports car with great performance, whether you will be able to appreciate that on the street is a question everyone has to consider.

Porsche has overpriced the Cayman. They sold out the car initially to the people that wanted to have a great alternative to the Boxster and to whom the price was not that big of an issue. Now they are waiting for the second wave of buyers who do have to give some consideration to value ( those worth less than a million $ )no matter how absurd it is to buy any car at this price. I think the second wave is not stepping up as fast as Porsche thought and they now have a few too many leftovers. You don't need to buy a 'used' Cayman to take $6000 off the price of the car, there are more than a few new cars on the lot for that price. I think you will be able to find a 2006 leftover in Dec. if you are willing to travel 500-1000 miles to buy it.

I like the new look of the 335 a lot and the power is certainly there, but I sold my 330CI to buy my Cayman because I wanted an entirely new type of driving experience and that it is! The two cannot really be compared to one another. All I can say is that I never looked fprward to driving my BMW like I do MY Porsche.

I think K-Man S makes a good point.

Aloha Russ

in OP's statement of bmw understating times, porshce does as well. the bmw 335 is a totally different car than the cayman. depends on what you want. the cayman versus the mz coupe is a more appropriate comparison. in the end, as aforementioned, you should test drive both cars and get what YOU want/need. good luck and congrats on the impending car purchase. you must be very excited :-)
