So in the past year I have "rewarded" myself a little too much. I sat down, looked at what toys I got and how my wife barely got any "toys" of her own and realized I should be cutting down big time. I work hard, but so does my wife and I would like to be married to that awesome woman for the rest of my life.
That all said, there are couple of AutoX and DE events coming up and I would like to keep my "play" budget tight. I don't want to buy a dirt cheap helmet and I also have a huge melon (size XXL 8 1/2 for helmets), so not that much choice out there either. Good helmet is what, $500 or so. Is there a place somewhere on the Internet or localy here in Chicago I could rent a helmet for those events.
I would like to spend my play budget on improving skills, not on supplies.
$100 there,$500 there, and I am spending more on car stuff than I should. I spent last year just on detailing products over $500. I have to slow this down.
My other choice is no AutoX or DE

I've never heard of any place that rents helmets - go kart places will have loaner helmets you use while there, and some PCA regions have loaner helmets at their events... here's a place where you can get a very good helmet for only $138.45... you 'd almost spend that much to rent one for two or three events.

I know our region keeps a "loaner" helmet handy at the autocross. Your's might too. They smell kindy funky and I'd haul *ss around the course just to get it off my head ASAP.
I'm the registrar for our DE program and we do not offer loaner helmets at our track events.
Another possibility is that you check around with some of the track rats in your region. They might have a retired SA2000 helmet in the garage now that SA2005's are available.

I think I will just get that Pyrotect helmet. I am just a novice and do not plan to do too many DEs just yet, so this should work until I allow myself some more play money.

For liability reasons I can't imagine any company renting helmets to be used outside of its control. After an impact (or a hard drop) there can be internal damage to the helmet which can't be seen from an external inspection. Thus there would be no easy way to tell if a returned helmet is still safe to use.
Same thing is true when buying used from an unknown source.
Apsinkus, I use one of the Pyrotec helmets, and at the last AX I attended I saw that the PCA region had bought a whole new set of them to use as their loaners. May not work for TT or racing, but OK for AX or DE. Try to find a dealer - fitting is not always easy, so internet may involve several tries.

Don't they only allow open face ones in AutoX, but NOT in DA?

PCA National doesn't mandate open or closed helmets in there operating guidelines. It only states that it should have a current SNELL rating. You're local region might impose some funky rules, but it doesn't come down from PCA national on carved stone tablets.
Open faced helmets make it easier to communicate in the car if you don't use a chatterbox communication system.
Personally, I prefer a closed face helmet. I wear a Sparco and use a chatterbox. I have "stereo" in there - with a speaker in each earpiece. I have a microphone in the chin plate.
