Has any of you guys tried to use a camera with a hard drive (v/s tape) . I just bought one and wasted the memory of two great track days at Watkins Glen . The video was great when waiting on the paddocks but stopped as soon as i entered the track.
Is there an expert among you who can enlighten me?
I haven't used one, but hard drives aren't really meant for vibration. If you look at a regular iPod, or similar devices, they don't recommend exercising (or shaking) them very much. The memory based devices are more suited to that task. What did it do when it stopped?

I think Dan got something from the place he bought it from for the same purpose. ... I leaned mine all the way back, some folks left it vertically.
Yes. That's the setup I have. For $2 I ordered the "Plastic U-Bolt Adapter" referenced in my post above (pic below). I too lean it back so the middle section is horizontal which both lowers & moves the camera back for a better angle. I also glued a thin large rubber washer onto the camera mounting plate to protect the camera bottom & allow a very tight fit.

It just went blank (actually blue)...However I was too busy getting on the track to check in my rearview mirror what it did. If it is vibrations, I will consider exchanging it for a flash memory camera. What c
kind of autonomy do they get?
I don't know of any with flash memory based camera because of the expense. Have you tried it on the street? I'd be curious to know if was a one time incident, or if it is persistent.

I've got a JVC with the hard drive and it does not work at all if you plan on doing any spirited driving. It has a shock or fall sensor in it that detects sudden movement and shuts the hd down to prevent damage. After I shifted hard from 1st to 2nd all I got was a blue screen.
It is a year or so old, so maybe some of the newer technology is better. Beware of the anti shock feature.

I guess that does it :mine is a brain new Sony, and it has a feature to disable the fall sensor...but with or without the fall sensor activated, I got the same blue screen as soon as I shifted in second . What makes me mad is that I have no use for a camera other than the track use and I specifically asked the salesperson whether it would work on those conditions.
The head requires precise positioning and the drive will stop recording instead of allowing the head to crash into the magnetic platter (and causing damage). The sensors cause it to park quicker, but the drive will park itself if necessary. You should know better than to trust the salesmen at these stores ... they are almost always full of it.
