Brake Upgrade (Carrera S Calipers)

Question:
Has anybody tried using 997 Carrera "S" disc's and callipers on the Cayman S ???(our front calliper is the same as the rear on the Carrera S but the fronts are larger at 330 rather than 318 and have a bigger pad area...just a thought for a relatively inexpensive brake upgrade....and I can get a set for humble money……Advice please from anybody that has either done this or has the offsets etc to hand to say it will or wont work ..Thanks

My first thought is that adding bigger calipers to the front will change the front/rear brake bias whiich could have undesired results. That would mean that the rears need to be upgraded at the same time and relatively equally. But I am no expert on this mod.

As Gator said you may want to think about upgrading the rears too, although the 997 is not a good comparison there because it is rear engined I would expect it to have larger than "normal" rear brakes so more rear brake bias could be attained as needed.

Then again the weights of the two cars are similar, if you have bumped up your HP it is conceivable that a brake upgrade to the 997 calipers and pads might have some benefit. If you don't mind us asking, what can you source them for?

While you are at it, check on 997S PCCB rotors, calipers and pads too, if I do a brake upgrade that is likely what it will be.

I haven't checked this out yet, either...this would be a good thing to know...I'd imagine that if the struts are the same then the calipers and rotors would/should bolt on...

My understanding is that the bigger rotors would not necesarily supply more stopping "power", but rather would provide a bigger heat sink...which is in itself a good thing, as the function of brakes is to convert kinetic energy into heat energy...

This is a good thing to pursue...

Would this impact the ABS modulator? Is it calibrated based on the brakes or simply the lack of rotation on the wheel?

Thanks for the replies, but I think you’ve slightly misunderstood me with the comments you’ve posted back.
I am thinking of putting the Carrera S Disc’s and callipers not only on the front, but also on the rear.
It’s just that it would appear that the Rear Calliper on the Carrera is the same as our existing Front one, yes of course the disc is different as it carries the Hand brake mechanism and the Shoes in the hub Part of the disc, but I don’t know all the information. What I do know is the following
Cayman S
Front Disc 318 x 28 and Pads are 2332902
Rear Disc 299 x 24 and Pads are 2179203
Carerra S
Front Disc 330 x ? and Pads are 2313901
Rear Disc 330 x ? and pads are 2332902

Now maybe if the disc’s on the Carrera S are the same thickness as our fronts (28mm) it would just need a modded bracket on the rear to allow for the bigger diameter rear disc ?

Think the only way to find out is go get and try !!!!!

BTW Ken The “Humble “ price is £750 for the Carrera S Front and Rear Callipers / Disc and Pads all with 127 miles on them
Going onto PCCB I was well put off not particularly with the initial >£5k price but with the £5k/corner to replace them (i.e.£20k to replace the brakes) can you just imagine my missis’s face with a bill like that!!!!!!!!!

Alcon want to “borrow” my car to make a set of “ceramic” Disc’s and Pads (at which point I would get a free set) but :
1) At the moment I’ve not had time to loose the car for 10-20 days and
2) as the disc cost are phenomenal (and don’t forget they wear down equally with the Pads ) even if I got a free set, I wouldn’t like to replace them….. hence why I’m looking for a shall we say “Less Expensive” alternative by using the Carrera S stuff

Fadiboy as far as I know the ABS is similar on the Carrera S but much modded on the GT3 which runs larger diameter disc's (350mm F & R) with 6 pot calipers on the front...so ???

Who is Alcon? Do they make ceramic rotors and pads as good as the Porsche ones? I would be leary of any non-Porsche stuff in that regard. Sounds like a good price on the Carrera S complete front and rear brake setup. Is that new or used?

I guess my question would be: Is the modulation that is applied in an ABS situation calculated assuming a certain brake size and thus force? If it is then equal force applied to two different sized rotors will yield different braking forces and potential lock up.

THE thing to check are the piston sizes -

Carrera S does indeed use the Cayman S fronts as the Carrera S rears.
The fronts are 996 TT fronts!

2474 & 2405 Pagid sizes --

My Guy has said that I can "Take and Try" with the Carrera S setup so... That's what I'll do and see what happens !!!

Ken they are 2nd hand, but with only 127 miles from new

Alcon are mainly involved with WRC (World Rally Cars) and supply for Subaru, Citroen, Peugeot, and are also in F1 with Honda, Toyota etc They supply the brakes for Astons, Bentley and Jaguar as well, so I would suggest that they half know what they are doing.

Cool let me know how it goes and let me know if they have extra sets for me! Actually if Alcon wants to become a sponsor I'll swap them for some carbon fiber rotors, pads and calipers to test in an article.
