I haven't used any, but the cheap route is a Longacre Hot Lap timing system. The more expensive route is to use a GPS-based data logger such as a DL-1. The former just times your laps, while the latter will tell you everything you need to know about every aspect of every lap, including when you soiled your underwear. Actually, I guess the cheapest route is a friend at the fence with a stopwatch.
I have a hotlap timer for sale if you want to buy it. However if you are serious about timing your laps and doing more than just getting a time then you need to get a traqmate or equivalent.
