Does Sport Chrono package violate some PCA chapter's rules?
Hi,
I'm new to this form and new to Porsches in general.**I am looking for a used cayman s that I will use occasionally for DE events.**I know that some of the chapter's (specifically Upper Canada Region) rules state that absolutely no timers are permitted, but will they allow the car to run if the timer is not used (is there some way to disconnect it for the event?).**Would it be better to look for a car without the sport chrono package to avoid any conflict?
Thanks!
Sport Chrono and Chrono Plus
This optional package is a valuable addition for trackday use. Available in conjunction with the CDR-24 CD radio, it includes a swivel-mounted analog and digital timer unit which is centrally located on the dashboard. All functions are easily accessible via the control stalk for the on-board computer. Analog dials measure hours, minutes and seconds, while a separate digital field displays whole seconds, tenths and one hundredths of a second. A second digital display runs in parallel in the instrument cluster. Click this Link to visit the FAQ entry for Sport Chrono.
You will likely need someone from UCR to comment, but I would not worry about the sport chrono package. I ran with UCR at Mosport this year and didn't have any problem with my AIM lap timer and Traqmate.

For insurance purposes NO timing can be done at PCA DE events in ANY region. That being said, just having Sport Chrono doesn't mean you are using. What most regions say is that they discourage the use of timing equipment and if they see you using it you will get into trouble, that being said, using Sport Chrono can be done without anyone outside the car seeing it and they know it so they let it slide, there is no ban on cars with Sport Chrono. I wouldn't run around the paddock bragging about using it unless you know the host for the event has insurance that allows it.

No, Timing is allowed, its in the PCA verbage bylaws. The driver ed people just would like to keep it low profile. Remeber if a street driven and insured car crashes on track and wants to claim insurance, the insurance company has an out. It was a "timed" or "racing" not education, driver ed.

There are plenty of regions that allow it and, as Ernie says, it is allowed by PCA. I would say that just about all of the upper run groups in Connecticut Valley PCA run with some kind of timing. The main straight wall at all events is lined up with beacons

Please re-read. While some regions and PCA "allow" it, the INSURANCE that PCA carries for these events does NOT. So if you get into a wreck and are caught using it the insurance PCA has goes out the window. Some regions are more concerned about that than others. There is only one source now for PCA insurance for all DE events and that insurance doesn't allow it, that's what I am trying to say, which technically means no PCA DE should allow it, even though PCA itself doesn't ban it. Hope that made more sense...

So I guess if they saw it when they check the car at registration, covering the timer screen or something to that effect would please the event officials? I got the feeling from the PCA UCR website they were very "by the book". The Audi club I used to run with didn't require anything aftermarket (like mounting a fire extinguisher) to participate. Feel free to mention any other surprizes I might run into when running with PCA. Thanks for the infomation.

I've instructed with UCR at Calabogie and having Sport Chrono in my car was not an issue.
