Porsche GT3RSR have got beaten by F430GT in both FIAGT and ALMS(except for Spa 24h).The result is quite disappointing.Just look at the rear wheels on 997RSR,they seem to be a litte too lag, making the tail looks freakly wide. What do you think about these 2 big rear wheel?IMO,Porsche's rear-engine 911 race cars do meet some difficulties due to the weight from the tail.No no can overcome the problems due to the rear-engine when they need more speed to beat their competitors.
Porsche surely know that mid-engine is better than rear-engine in handling. Thanks to the capability and intelligence of the Porsche engineers, the street-going GT2&Gt3 never be threaten by other mid-engine or front-engine-AWD sportcars of similar power-to-weight figure. But what if a grope of capable engineers make a serious 50:50 car?Just like the GTR ,Scuderia and the up coming new Honda NSX?
SO,is it time for Porsche motorsport to race the cayman?
Sure but they never will.
Sales agendas and product legacy all driven by $$$ and now override all other factors, sadly.
I figure the Cayman will remain where it is at entry level, which face it, is what it was intended for. After Panamera release I have bets that they will create a mid mounted beast, but you can bet it will be the "All New Mid mounted 911" oh and with a 911 price tag to match.
it will happen. it has to happen. too many privateers are racing it succesfully in Europe for them to ignore it. But I do think it will take considerable time...
until they come to terms with putting an equal engine in a cayman to a 911 they have no plans to race it. They could sell a cayman for 100k with a GT3 engine in it. I guess they just don't want to. It is sad. A true dry sump engine with 400 plus hp, would be awesome. And maybe put some wider tires on the car for more grip. oh the possiblities are endless.
As others ahave said they won't do that but what they should do is migrate the top of the line body to a mid engine design. I know the purists will say blasphemy but they said that about going from air-cooled engines to water-cooled engines too.
I honestly think that in two years, Porsche will have to address the Audi R8 & new R8 V10 Turbo mid engine success story. Audi is in the biz to make money and they will decide to open their production of the R8/ R8 V10 Turbo once they realize their overwhelming success of the R8 and the new Turbo R10 into the Porsche market. ( The most profitable segment of the whole auto industry!)
This new Audi car IS just that good!
To me its a complete no brainer. Porsche is very capable of meeting the Audi R8 challenge, but it CANNOT do this while resting on its laurels of the past. That's how competition works!

Porsche control VW who control Audi. Porsche faces no danger from the Audi corps.
