For several years, I used my standard "record the kids activities" Sony camcorder (miniDV tapes) with a home-built mounting bracket attached to the headrest uprights on the passenger seat of my BMW 3 series. After having the tripod mounting socket break inside the camcorder, and then purchasing my CS, I needed a different solution. So I now use the ChaseCam camera, suction cup mount and microphone together with that same old Sony camcorder. The Sony fits nice and snuggly inside the center console storage bin - you couldn't ask for a better squeeze fit - no rattles or movement at all.
Most of the time I mount the ChaseCam on the exterior of the front windshield, as this avoids annoying reflections of the dashboard off the inside of the windshield. It's also instructive to record video down low, along the side of your car to observe how well (or poorly) you are hitting your apexes and how much slip angle you are getting from the front and rear tires.
The ChaseCam 3 suction cup mount is excellent. Together with the low mass of the bullet camera, the video is stable as you can get. The camera also comes with a very wide angle lens to give you a full view. (I previously ran a 1.5X wide angle converter on my camcorder, and wished I had a 2X converter to make it even wider.)
ChaseCam's PDR is really nice if you want to quickly get video into your computer. However I've been quite happy with continued use of my camcorder and applying the money I would have spent on the PDR for something of more benefit to my autocross and track day addiction/afliction. ;-)
PM me if you want to see sample videos from either AX or DE events.
