I am curious as to the brand of helmet most club members are using for PCA club racing. The spec requires Snell M2005/DOT (w/fireproof lining) so as I went shopping, I was looking at Simpson FR Cruiser. The sales rep also presented the Zamp J-1 which sells at a substantially lower price.
I'm familiar with the adage "what's your head worth" and would like to know if anyone has any experience with the Zamp J-1 or what other makes and models you might recommend.
Thank you,
Joe

Did you try them on? You need to find one that is comfortable to wear and provides the level of visibility that works for you. I strongly suggest wearing it for a few minutes to see how it feels. I walked in to OG Racing expecting to buy a Bell and wound up with a Simpson Voyager which was much more comfortable for me (in my under $500 price range). The X-Large Bell was less comfortable than the Large Simpson, so try multiple sizes to be sure you get a good fit.

The spec requires Snell M2005/DOT is a minimum requirement for some clubs and track, but it is really a motorcycle helmet, tested to different standards than a car-racing helmet. Many clubs and tracks require the SA designation (Special Application which includes different testing criteria and flame proof lining). There are quite a few tracks, and more all the time, that will not let you on the track with an M-spec helmet. Myself, I will only put the only head and brain I have into an SA helmet... I use a Bell kevlar composite full-face model. If you have an M-spec helmet and want to run at a track that requires SA, you'll need to get a new one anyway, so my advice to helmet buyers is always the SA spec, yes they're a little more - but safer for the kind of applications we're using them for.
Again, it's the only brain you have - imo, it's not a place to split hairs over price...

I'm on my 3rd Simpson Voyager. It's more comfortable than I could find in a Bell, but Bells may fit rounder heads better. Another fine helmet is the Arai, but they cost several hundred more. Have the sales person help you with proper fitting.
You'll need a SA-rated helmet for PCA club racing. M-rated helmets don't have the nomex lining you mentioned.

I like my Arai. Very comfortable and compatible with a HANS device (has the anchor holes drilled). BMW CCA requires a HANS or similar for racing and I would suspect PCA will do the same (if they don't already). If you are going racing and not just doing DE's/track events I would be buying a helmet with that in mind. Motorcycle helmets won't work.
Hope that helps,
Tom

Funny the banner ad from Google I am seeing now is for a motorcycle helmet shop. Anyway, if the helmet isn't painted to match the car then don't wear it, that's a fashion faux pas.
My wife was looking at helmets for me for xmas but there were so many and pricing all over the map she didn't have a clue what I would like or choose. Some of the new carbon fiber ones look nice, but unless you have a black car there is that whole color match thing again...
There's some good advice in this thread (e.g., buy an SA rated helmet). But the best advice is make sure it fits right. And by fitting right, it should be comfortable but tight. You don't want it to easily move on your head. Different helmets in the same size fit differently. That's why it's best to go to a place that will let you try on several different brands and can ensure you get the right fit.
I won't touch the yellow comment -- don't want the rest of my files deleted.
