Latest story is - my Cayman shows signs of melting the power steering lines after just one DE day at Lime Rock. Tommy at Huntington Porsche checked it and ordered necessary parts for factory repair. I have been reading everything in the world on the CaymanClub.net on this and other items. Seems many people are continuing to go for the added cooler which is like $1400.
After my 2nd complete rack & power steering system under warranty on the Boxster I went for about 5 years without any further problem. During this time the key was checking and adding power steering fluid after every event. It always uses a few ounces per track day.
Well stupid me I didn't check the Cayman. Figuring it was new and Porsche had revised the lines in 2003 or 2004 after my friend Bill's power steering was destroyed by some guy who drove his car for one run group (no names please). I checked the Cayman yesterday and big surprise (not) the reservoir is completely empty. I am I dumb of what ?
What you should be aware of and consider doing is replace the crank pulley with an under-drive unit plus doing the fluid checks. It will help keep the power steering fluid from overheating and melting everything. I don't think you need the cooler unless you are actually doing races of over 30 minutes. Checked all the website I could think of and only found 2 companies that make this. One is Mantissport.ca in Canada nice but too expensive $300 for pulley plus $75 for tool to install. Note you also need a new crank bolt. Other one is BBI Autosport in Calif it's $239 including the install tool. You tech guys probably already have the tool. It's a piece of steel with 2 holes to bolt the tool to the pulley and hold it while you torque the crank bolt.

Can you please how to check for the fluid level? I'm used to an exposed engine and can't find it anywhere in the manual.
Thanks

I had the same problem when I got the Cayman. Looked in owners manual. It says go to a qualified Porsche Tech. Went to my local dealer and spoke to tech there. Surprisingly most of them didn't know how to get at the engine either.
It's pretty easy. Take a good size screwdriver or something to pry with and get under the carpet cover over the engine. That's the thing behind you in case you didn't know. Once you get an edge of the carpet cover up out of the metal &/or plastic surrounding it, just continue to work the carpet out of this surround. There are tabbed insert on sides & ends that go under the surround to hold the carpet cover in. It's fairly heavy and couple inches thick. Once you get it started it's comes right out. Then you see an aluminum cover with 5 torque head bolts. Remove them and there's the engine. Power steering cap & resevoir is behind the drivers seat toward the middle of the engine. Note this is not your basic power steering fluid. You need Pentosin 11S. It's used by Porsche, Audi, etc so some parts store surprise me and have it. If not Impotec, PaP-Parts, etc have it. Should be around $18 liter.
I check it cold with engine off. It should be just on the tip of the dip stick.
You might want to take the tray off under the drivers side and take a look at the lines. If anything is wet or leaking you have at least the start of a problem.

Thanks for clearing that up Augie. I thought there would be some other access point besides ripping the engine cover out. I'm very anal about checking all the fluid levels and it's annoying that there is no easy way to do this for the power steering.
If anyone tackles the insulation project, please be sure to write up an article about it!

well since u owned a Boxster one day, could I please ask the same question about her?!
It's even easier in a Boxster because it has exposed lock downs. OK I need to think about a stock Boxster because I had most of original stuff removed and out of my way in my Boxster.
If you have the storage box and/or rear speakers - you need to remove them first; remember to unplug the speaker lines once you lift them off. I d
