I put this here due to it being a DE question, but maybe its more appropriate in Tires forum? I'm sure it will be interpreted for me.I'm looking at highs around 50 for DE this weekend. Lows around freezing, so at least the mornings will be spent in the 30's and low 40's. Issues for my MPSC's? Should I run street tires (PS2's)? Two motivations for the question really:1) I know that it isn't good for R compound tires to freeze. Since my trailer isn't heated, they'll likely be darn cold by morning. I don't know what driving them in those temps will do.2) I use winter tires instead of PS2's when temps go below 45-ish regularly due to PS2's not being designed to be run so cold.Anyway, I don't want to do anything detrimental to the tires, or more importantly have a tire issue that is detrimental to me!Thanks,John

Even the stock tires are not great around freezing, the issue will be more of what can you get your tire temps up to. I would go ahead and run the MPSC's but you need to give yourself a few laps to get them up to operating temperatures which means you need to be careful and not overdrive your tires.

Generally, R tires (and slicks) shouldn't be stored, much less driven, below freezing. That can cause cracking. At the temps you mentioned you won't be able to get as much heat into the tires so don't expect as much grip, but as long as you're above freezing I doubt you'll cause any tire damage.

MPSC are notoriously bad in cold weather - even on warm days they take a long time to come up to temperature.

I would use stock tires when it's really cold in the am. Later in the day you could use MPSC but would have to take time to warm them up.

I would imagine they would heat up reasonably well at BIR.

Worth starting up at higher pressures than a hot summer day would be teh only other thing I suppose.


I was planning on going to the event as a spectator and get a feel for the Porsche Club, but with the weather it wasnt worth it.

yep, 8" of snow will shut down a DE! First time the club had an event cancelled.

Race tires will actually blister if they are too cold and you try driving them hard. I'd guess uneven heating but not sure. I saw a guy blister a brand new set of Goodyear race tires at a cold March race once. Nobody could figure out what caused it until he went back to the race tire distributor (Penske) who explained it.
