can you take an automatic on a track day ?

I have ordered a cayman with Tiptronic S transmission, since its going to be my everyday city car and my mother might want to use it occasionally.

But i sure would like to go on a track day at least once in the Cayman.

my question is can automatic cars go on tracks ? my main fear is that if something goes wrong, eg i spin out, i don't have any control in seperating the wheels from the engine and hence could damage the gear box and engine.

is this an issure or am i just not understanding how automatic works.

plus do ppl take auto cars to trackdays at all ? will i be the laughing stock if i do ?

There are plenty of automatic cars on track. Including Formula1 and I'm sure there are plenty of other members here who take their cars to the tracks with the tip transmission. You'll be just fine.

I try to take mine to the track at least once a month - Tips need their exercise too!

Tips can really shine on the track.
You can downshift faster in a Tip than matching revs by Heal N Toeing a manual.
Especially if you are running down a couple of gears.
And, a spin in a Tip does not mean putting both feet into the pedals and worrying about auto-rotating the engine. The tip will simply stall the engine, not crashing the pistons into the valves.
I've had a previous Tip Cayman, and the criticism of this transmission comes from people who have not learned to drive it. Just like when you learn how to drive a manual, you need to recognize it's characteristics to take advantage of it.
Hurley Haywood turns faster times in a Tip than a 6 speed manual. You can too.
All the best.
James

Absolutely - Get ye to the track! Plenty of people take automatics to the track. You will be in the minority, but nobody will care. I've instructed students in automatics, tips and of course manuals. They all have fun and learn a lot.

My twenty-something year old daughter has torn-up the track at Pueblo Motorsports Park in a slush-box Honda Civic in the company of mostly bimmers. Her instructors had a blast with her and she developed skills that were letting her keep up with far more capable cars (and less capable drivers). You'll have far more fun than that in a Cayman - auto or not!

No. Track cars are supposed to be manuals!!!! But if that is all you have...then OK. On another note, I knew someone who only had one arm and he drove a auto on the track because he couldn't shift and hold the wheel at the same time.
