I took mine to Pocono 1 for the north course and it was awsome. It performs excellent on the track. I am going to Mid Ohio next. How many cars can you take out of the box, and bring to the track with no modifications and have them perform like this?

I agree it performs quite well box stock on the track. I did find that the 17" tires were almost the weakest link but that took a little bit to discover as the course took awhile to learn. I just wonder if it was just the tires and not a combo of alignment, tires, air pressure and suspension. I did play with the tire pressure some, dropping it until the wear started using some of the corner tread. Although I am quite happy with the handling, over all no bad tendency for under/over steer. I'm looking forward to my next event but would like to make some changes beforehand, just wanted to hear others opinions first.

What mods have you made or plan to make to improve track performance?

On a side note, any lack of power was "no factor" due to limited traction. Having driven a couple CS's as a loaner, the lack of traction was quite rear biased vs the 2.7 being more neutral, meaning it had limited traction both front and rear, not real bad just not very well suited for the track. Having driven the CS some, and reading the need or want for many CS owners to go up to a 275-295 rear tire my above findings seem to be correct. Although the 2.7 has narrower width, the sizes are well balanced from front to rear, with cornering, braking and acceleration. I hope I'm right in thinking that the factory CS rim and tire sizes may well be the ideal package for the 2.7, and so far that is on the "get list" for now.

Sorry for the long winded post.

2.7 is blast on the track bone stock. And will hang with most cars you will find on at average DE event. There's always going to be someone out there with more HP who will smoke you on the straights, but rarely will you find a car that handles better and is as easy to drive near the limit.

From a "track toy" perspective, I don't think the price differential of the CS is justified. OTOH, the extra power and available goodies on the CS make it a better all-'rounder and more fun on the street.

For what its worth... my opinion

I have a 2.7 and have tracked it, now twice, at Thunderhill in California. It is stone stock, with 18in rims and the Bridgstones... Firstly, the car was totally a blast. my (Porsche) instructors had not been in a Cayman and remarked that it was amazingly neutral in handling and pretty quick.

My last instructor was this old dude, who drove in with a 912... yep. He gets in and after a warm up lap starts yelling, break here, accelerate!!!!, you still had 3 feet of track left !!! would stop. He was amazing !! after trying his line, I felt the 2.7 was keeping up with other 911s give or take. there were no other Cayman's in my run group. Be attentive to tire pressures. After the tires heat up, if you started with stock pressure, they will go too high. I ran one sessions starting at stock and both my instuctor and I agreeded that traction was dicey. I've settled on bleeding 2-3 pounds off of cold stock as a good compromise. Using the TMPS, at track temps, after the bleed, they settled at 30 Front, 36 Rear .. .and that stabilized the car. Tire wear was flat and with no edge roll over.

OK, for the not so good news. After just two DE's, the front brakes were almost to the wear sensor. I felt that they were still performning well, but had the dealer install new OEM's. After that experience, I purchased Pagid Orange pads. I just completed installing them on all four corners and will try them at Thunderhill this week. I can post opinions on the difference Friday. Also, more experience with the instructions by the (amazing) old dude, I might have more insight on how the 2.7 stands up to the variety of makes/models that will be at this DE (open to all makes).

So, to your question, so far the 2.7 is a great Track toy. Yes, the extra 50 hp from the CS would be nice... and I thought about that after both DE's so far, but "during" the runs, I was having just too much fun with my 2.7 to think about anything else!! And, with a bit of good driving, if I do lap with CS's, or whatever with more hp... makes me feel that much BETTER.

have fun... Don

D&D; You said you were on 18" wheels, which tires did you run? Do you still want more tire or is that a pretty good set up for our cars?

I totally agree that the 2.7 is one mighty fine track toy, just wanted to hear from some of you that have tracked it. My guess would be, like you said the instructors ability to coach you differently to maximize your driving skill and exploit the handling aspect is a big plus. I've only logged 100 or so track miles and have lots of learning to do yet.

Yep.. 18 in rims with Brigestone Potenza RE050A... 235/40 front, 265/40 rear.
My guess is that the 17in rims and smaller tread (215 F/ 235 R if memory serves) would be nice, but the extra contact area really makes the car ride on rails cornering.

Enjoy... Don

Cayman 2.7 benefits greatly from:

1)GT3 air ducts/guides for front brakes - almost a must for hard track driving on a 2.7 Cayman......trust me

2)Better pads

In general, a track/street alignment for more negative camber up front saves front tires from the outside edge griding into smithereens -

Craig..
The GT3 ducks apparently have been on back order from Germany... mine just shipped "today" after being on order for 5 weeks... of course, not in time for my next DE..... D&D

The 17" are 205 F/ 235 R which is over an inch less tread per than your set up.....Sounds like your happy with the 235/265 combo, can't wait to get those for my ride. Never did like the 17"s just too narrow and too much sidewall, I'm doing my best to wear them out, so I'm forced to pop for the 18"s.

I'm sure someone here wants to trade 17"s for 18"

I am getting my 2.7 ready for Road America on Memorial weekend. I am going to run Pagid Orange and ATE brake fluid which is the same set-up I used on my 986. I was very happy and experienced no issues. I also bought a set of Rennline aluminum track mats to save the carpet and a CG-Lock to keep me in the seat better. I picked up an extra set of new take-off CS 18" wheels with Michelins to grind up at the track. I have a halon extinguisher but have not purchased a mounting bracket yet but plan to. My car has PASM and SC so I am looking forward to trying those out on the track.

Also think about getting some paint protection film on the car. There is a lot of junk flying around out there.

My final recommendation is check your insurance! Don't be that guy driving on the track without property damage or liability coverage. If you have any assets worth protecting make sure you are well covered. It always surprises me when I talk to people and they have no idea if they are covered or not. Or even worse think that because they are at the track they are relieved of liability and no one can sue them!
