Apply car numbers at home or track?

I am doing my first DE this weekend w/ PCA. I have run with BMWCCA before, and they give us numbers to be stuck to the windows at the track. I was thinking of sticking my adhesive numbers on the car at home since the car is clean now, and it is one less thing to take care of at the track. At the BMWCCA DEs, one of the people running the event goes around removing the numbers from the cars at the end of the weekend. I always wonder if they are doing this out of courtesy, or if driving around on the street with the car numbers on attracts too much attention from the po-po or some other reason?

IMHO, the Cayman already stands out from the hoi polloi on public roads and highways. Adding numbers before you get to the track just makes you a bigger target.

Before I trailered my car to DE's, I took a spray bottle of Meguiar's or Griot's Speed Shine or equivalent to the track. I'd clean the doors and apply the numbers on-site, no big deal.

Good luck, listen to your instructor, and let us know how it goes.

Which track?

Road America

This will be my 4th time there. I was there last over the April 26-27 weekend w/ BMWCCA.

I try to avoid driving on public roads with DE numbers on my car. I don't want extra attention.

Road America's on my list, along with Laguna Seca and Mid-Ohio.

BTW, you're wise to avail yourself of all schools, not just PCA. I've found BMW people to be just as nice as PCA'ers, and they don't get too upset when you're faster.

John

So far: Road Atlanta, Lowe's Motor Speedway, Watkins Glen, Virginia International Raceway (North, South and Full circuits), Roebling Road, Barber Motorsports Park, Carolina Motorsports Park.

Obviously a matter of taste, but I say put them on and "represent". I admit leaving my helmet under the cargo net between the seats in plain view when going to and fro events.

I like making the point to the universe that "I track this car".

But that is me, and I was raised on the po side of the tracks and will forever be in a race to overcompensate for a materially deprived childhood.

You may not have the same psychological issues.

I'm going to my first PCA DE event in er, ah "quite a while" at the Glen next month and was wondering about numbers too. Can I just print some out and tape them on the inside of the windows, or do they have to be on the outside body, or??? We used to do the shoe polish numbers on the inside of the glass. What does PCA require? Thanks.

I like being in both clubs because it increases the # of DE's I can go to each year. I was in BMWCCA first because I had a BMW before I got my CS last year. I would say Porsche is usually the largest non-BMW contingent at BMWCCA events I have been to. They also usually match me up with instructors who drive Porsches.

I live about 15 miles from the track. I usually put them on at home.

PCA has no requirements. It's up to each Region to set its own numbering system (location, size, etc.), so you'll need to check with the DE organizers for their specific rules.

I put my #'s on the track but you have to make sure the surface is clean AND the magnets are clean. Get a speed shine wipe kit from Griots garage for mobile cleaning needs.

I put my helmet on my seat in between groups and the sweat from my helmet pad left a mark on my seat! I had to spend some time cleaning and buffing out the leather. Next time its going on the back shelf.
