CAYMANS DOMINATE: Carolina's PCA AutoX w/VIDEO

This was my first AutoX experience and I have to say that I had a blast . It was the 2nd Carolina's Region PCA AutoX of the year and there was a turnout of around 40 - 50 cars. Two of my fellow Cayman Clubbers (GLipscomb, Greg and MidnightBlue2007CS, Andrew) were there too which made the event that much better. GLipscomb took the FTD in his Cayman 2.7L and I was behind him with the second fastest time of the day in my CS. We routed several Carreras and about 5 Turbos one of which was heavily modded and turning out about 650 hp. To be fair the course was very tight, slow, and technical which obviously favored our Caymans over the other models. To give you an idea we remained in first gear for the entire run. The video is from my car.

Wow, first gear all the way?! That is a tight course. Congrats on your performance - Caymans rule!

Sorry - this video is no longer available.......................

Probably there was an extreme amount of embarrassment, that the only gear used was first.........?

They recorded that I didn't knock over any cones on that particular run but watching the video it looks like I clipped one on the corner. When you don't have AutoX experience it is difficult to get a feel for car position in relation to the cones.

Not so much for me; I would be more embarrassed if I had the heavily track modified turbo and lost to a couple of lowly Caymans . I do wish I had done one run shifting up to second gear but I would have had to shift back down so quickly I felt the gain would be minimal and introduce more possibility for error.

Please forgive my misunderstanding of US Auto Cross............. In the UK we run on race tracks between 2.3 miles and 4.6 miles long.......... We hit 120, 130, 140 mph regularly, with a drop down to 20/30mph at hairpins............... perhaps it is a different world............. We would appreciate knowing more...............

We in the UK set up our Caymans, for different requirements..............

Karel, in the U.S. that would be called a "DE" for "Drivers Education" event which take place on a track and hits those kind of speeds. What is being shown here is what is called an autocross / AutoX which takes place on a makeshift course set up via cones in a large parking lot. Typically you never get above 50mph and the who thing lasts maybe a minute although some courses will be longer or shorter, faster or slower depending upon how they are set up.

It looks more demanding and fun to do than some larger racetracks!

I dropped by there for a few minutes. Had other business in Hickory. Did not see any Cars that I recognized in the parking area. I did get to see the blue#57 Cayman kick some @ss. The 911s were having a fit. There was a grey or silver turbo that just about took out the paved curb near the electric junction box at the top of the course. Slowed him down big time. Sorry I missed you guys. I left right at lunch. Next time I will try to make a day of it and drive. Looked like fun.

Andrew said you might come. Sorry I missed you, I was hoping to hear that sweet Borla of yours. Oh well, some other time. Greg was the one in the blue Cayman kicking @ss.

.
While the term "Autocross" is used to describe a single car, timed driving event, the type of course varies greatly.

I unfortuntaley have done more than my share of 1st gear events like shown by the OP, but I have also done events that were billed as AX that were simply open, timed laps on a proper race track.

I would not underestimate the skill required to be a good autocrosser. Whereas a track driver can literally spend his or her entire life learning the nuances of a given track, an autocrosser is usually afforded only a course walk of a layout never seen before, prior to the start of the timed laps.

Imagine going to a track that you have never seen before, and told that you will have three to six timed laps, and zero practice. Get a corner wrong in an AX, and you may not pay the price until several corners alter, but you WILL pay the price. EDIT: I suppose this can also be true on a track, but in AX, there are often no straights to speak of, and getting the entry to a given series of corners can be critical.

While I am sure that the track guys will jump on me here, I think it is pretty well accepted that an accomplished autocrosser will more easily transition to track driving, but the opposite does not always hold true.

Since this thread refers to an event in the Carolinas, perhaps some of you will join us for the Parade AX at Lowes? I am looking forward to seeing what the organizers pull together on the infield road course.

Brian
