So I have had my Cayman for about 2k miles now and I love it. Awesome car!
At this point, I feel I want to do a track day soon, but my car has an automatic transmission. Yes, I know what you are guys are going to say "why did you get auto if your going to track your car?"
Well, first I didn't know I was going to track it and plus 95%+ of my driving is city driving for my personal taste it doesn't make sense to get a manual car for a daily driver.
Anyways, so I wanted to get your opinion on if the auto could hold up for a couple track days a year? Do I need a front mount tranny cooler? I had a set of those on my Supra TT a bit ago and it took the temps down do a reasonable level. If so, do you know makes them and how much are they?
No Problem - I plan to track my Tip about 8 weekends this year; plenty of others take their Tips to the track as well. See the following link for a Boxster driver's tips for Tips at the track:
By the way, take a look at the center opening of your front bumper and you should see your tranny radiator is already there (Porsche is way ahead of you).

2006 CS Tip (Daily Driver & Part-time Track Toy)
2005 Ford Expedition (to haul the CS)

Gone, but not forgotten: 2002 WRX, 2004 MINI
I tracked my Tip Cayman S in April, it is fine, you need to drive a lap or two for the transmission to start keeping up the rev range and change to the sport shift pattern.
It is real fun and you can be real aggressive with it. Passing Vette's is real easy too, but if this is your first time driving, I would stick to the basics.
The only thing you have to be careful of is that in M mode, your transmission will not allow you to go from 5th gear directly to third, which would come in handy when preparing for a hairpin turn.
I track my CS Tip in manual mode all the time. I spend most of the track in third gear, if you keep your momentum up you'll rarely have to downshift to second except on the tightest of turns. There are some track sections where I have to watch that the RPMs don't get into redline territory in order to keep the Tiptronic from automatically shifting into fourth gear just as I am entering the braking zone for a turn. On the straights I just let the transmission decide when to shift into fourth. I guess I have never been on a track with a long enough straight to get into fifth.

I've tracked my tip at several events and since I came from Kart racing left foot braking is natural for me and allows you to keep the rev's up so it does not want to downshift.
Its best to track it in Auto mod until you become experienced then start using the M mode.

Check the video from KS-CS in his track topic thread from last weekend. He did an admirable job of controlling the tiptronic via the shifter buttons so I know doing so is possible.
