Well, after months of looking around and driving a bunch of cars, I finally settled on a track day car. I won't bore you with the details, and so without further ado, I introduce you to the Green Jelly Bean.
Its not the M3. Rather, its a track prepped 91 Miata. Why the change of plan? At the last track day, I picked up a catalog from Flying Miata. I could not believe how cheap stuff was, easily 1/2 to price of comparable equipment for an M3, and 1/3 or less the price of same stuff the CS. Porterfield R4s? 275 for CS, 97 for Miata. Need an exhaust? $400, not 1500. Then I checked into cars, and obviously there's tons more Miatas than M3, and the market is soft.
Then there's the fun factor. These cars are a blast to drive. Sure, it does not have the power of the CS, and its ride is not nearly as refined, but it will pull 1 g (its got 15x8 with 225/45s), and then feel is very direct. The car has a Sparco race seat, Autopower roll bar, Simpson harness, Tokico HP dampers with H&R springs, CSF race radiator, and 949 Racing 6ULs. Plus it gets 25mpg! All for the princely sum of $4200.
As for power, I'm planning to put in a supercharger, good for about 150hp. There's plenty of units in the market, they're pretty reliable, all for less than 3k.
Ostensibly this car is for my wife for tracking, but I have a strange feeling I'm going to love driving this one as much as the Cayman....
If anyone is going to Thunderhill on 7/12 I'll see you there in the Bean and the BluBlst.
Spec Miata is certainly one of the least expensive ways to get into actual racing - is that your plan, or are you just going to do DE/track days with it?

I might have to come check it out at THill. I also have been going back and forth on the issue of getting a cheaper track car. I can't wait for the full report.
miata is a great track car, reliable and cheap to run.
your only enemy is wt. keep stripping it out.
the price you paid is great!

Those Flying Miata brochures seem to be doing the trick for them. I ran across one at Thunderhill a few weeks ago at an NCRC event as did a friend of mine and now we're thinking of building the ultimate Flying Miata track Miata Although, I think 250WHP is going to be a minimum target for us...

Yes, the turbo, S/C route looks so tempting. You only need about 190-200 to get the same power to weight as the CS.
I also love that I can actually work on this car! I felt that there was nothing I could or should touch on the CS, except fiddling around with my video cameras and other gadgets, and doing the brakes. Now, I'm crawling all over this thing, getting my hands dirty and I love it.
By the way: One of the garages at TH has a Dynojet, and he's now familiar with how to do a CS. I dyno'd at 255hp/242tq a couple of weeks ago, late afternoon, about 90' out. He comp'd my pulls, since he screwed it up the first time. I think he's charging about 125? I can't remember the name of the garage, its on the back side, facing the skid pad. Ask for Kevin.

For now, just track days, as the car is supposedly for my wife. I doubt she'll put up a fight if forced to drive the CS.
Once I get more experience and take a racing school course, then I'd like to do club racing. I promise to get out of Mooty's way.

I had a year 2000 Miata for a couple years as a toy, over a year of which it was running an FM2 (flying miata) turbo system that I installed. I had an '03 996 at the same time, and the miata could keep up from 0-70'ish. The car was a blast. FM makes good stuff.

Wow, where did you get one for that cheap? The hardtop along is worth at least $800. Roll bar material (excluding labor) would have cost about $600 when new. The modifications material (at new prices) along plus the hardtop would have already be over $4200. Great buy.
