I'm a BIG fan of switcing pads for track days - especially if you will swap wheel/tires - it is extrremely easy to do.

Mark OEM/Pagid pad locations for easy rebedding and much less re-bed wear!

Just wait ... the slippery slope has just begun. I'd recommend curtailing how often you visit this site, or you'll slide right off the cliff.

Very interesting, and after seeing how easy it is to switch them, I might consider doing this as I sign up for more track events.

What is the recommended bedding procedure for the track pads if being used in this fashion?

Craig, can you elaborate a bit more on the statement you made “Mark OEM/Pagid pad locations for easy rebedding and much less re-bed wear”?

I'll take this one.

As your brakes wear, the surface of the rotors will gain grooves and valleys. The pads will wear into these grooves and valleys so that they match the rotor surface perfectly. Each rotor, and each side of each rotor will wear and bed in differently.

So, let say you took the inside left pad out, and then put it back on the outside right wheel. Well, that rotor surface will be different, so the pad will be touching the rotor only where it has high spots. Those high spots will wear off very quickly as you brake until the pad matches the new rotor surface. This turns your pads into dust very quickly, applies uneven heat to the rotor (which could damage them), and results in reduced braking until the pads and rotors are fully bedded to each other again.

Now, if you mark each pad as you remove them - left inner - left outer - right inner - right outer - and then you reinstall them in the same orientation that they were in before you removed them, you will skip 90%+ of this re-bedding process. The remaining 10% is because the rotors will have been worn a little during your track event, so there will be some very minor (probably unnoticeable) bedding after the original pads are replaced.

It is just as important to mark the track pads in the same way.

Exactly!

It saves big $$$ and 'makes' the $$$ Pagids more than a good value considering how bloody long they last...a LONG time -

Craig,

So how do you recommend bedding a new set of track pads? Should they be put on the car a week or so before the event?

I strongly prefer bedding in 2nd lap of first time out on a track day:
