Track Tires & Wheels

I am searching for track tires for the 19' Carrera Sport wheels. I have destroyed the Michelin PS2's that came with the car. We aredoing a track alignment and corner balancing. Then looking for front & rear strut braces. Then looking for sway bar upgrades to get the understeer out of the tight tracks and canyons. But immediately I need track tires for California Speedway 5/19 & 20/06 and Infineon Raceway 6/5/06. Apparently the Michelin PS Cup's rear sizes are not available in 265/35 only 265/30.Will this size work? What are you Cayman S track guys using for track tires? What Track or R rated tires are available in the 19's? Are you going to 18's. Are you going aftermarket wheels with difference widths and offsets. I am looking for a simple cost effective answer. I would prefer to just have the factory Carrera S wheel delivered with the car and put the track tires on for daily and weekend use (canyons & track). I have Damon Witter at Trire Rack working on this issue as well. Any ideas suggestioins or input would be greatly appreciated.

The simple answer is, unfortunately, there are no perfect sizes front and rearin 19'. If tire rack is researching the issue, they'll find an answer of some sort.

I the mean time you can do some calculation to figure out what happens to ride height, rpm/speed differences, http://gs.tolan-hoechst.com/tirecalc.htm.

you can't corner balance caymans, they dont have coil overs.

this car doesn't need front or rear strut braces. the shock towers are connect by somewsort of bulkhead already, take out the plastic trim up front and carpet in the back, you will see what i mean. whomever is trying to sell you strut tie bars is ugh..... questionable.

where can you get adj sway bars? if you find them, please post. i am looking for some.

get 1.25 camber up front and 1.75 or 2 deg in the back, toe out up front, you will not get much understeer at all.

if you want track wheels, i love my new jongbloed, i just dumped my fikse and kinessis fro them. also BBS RSGT is nice. i would recommend 18' RA1 in 245 and 275 width. they are PERFECT for the car.

i will be at infineon 6/5 with coastal driving as well. not sure what i will be driving that day.

oh, i didn't see 'cost effective'. the cheapest good wheels are oem take off's. call wheelenhancement.com.

if you want light wheels, see above comments.

You mean't 'moot' right?!

I have the BBS RSGT 18' wheels with the Toyo RA1s (245/275); love them. The rears are currently in short supply so not sure if you can get them in time for your events. If not, then the 235/285 MPSC are a fine choice.

I have a question about the BBS RSGT's, namely I briefly looked at them on Tire Rack and the weight was 21.6 lbs compared to the stock Cayman S wheels at 22lbs. Didn't seem like much of a different to me, or are people buying them for the slightly wider width (8.5 and 9.5 I think) ? I'm assuming the 9.5 on the back coupled with a 295 tire might help take some of the understeer out as well no? and provide a bit more grip?

Hi guys,

Yes Pete I ment Mooty, I am new to this chat stuff. Look forward to meeting you at Sears. I have artic silver Cayman and will be piting with someP-Heads from SoCal: a burgundy metalic Boxster S and a seal greay Carrara S, anda black Honda S2000.

K-Man S, No no no. Bigger contact patch in the rear will increase understeer or push. You need a bigger contact patch up front to reduce understeer with tire sizes. First I am trying setting the suspension to a track setting, ie max negative camber. I will discuss with my shops and contacts regarding toe-in and toe-out, caster and bump steering it. Will see how that works with new Michelin PS Cups at California Speedway and Sears Point. Then back to the drawing board as may be needed. BTW the sizes for PS Cups 19's are 235/35 and 265/30 (will knock off approximately 5 mph from top end). I am going to recheck with Tire Rack as theysaid no other rear sizes where made. We think a bigger front sway bar will be the simple and inexpensive fix. Maybe adjustable bars when some become available. Then going to 18's would provide a much wider selection of tire manufacurers and sizes of tires and wheels.

Will let you know how things workout this weekend at Fontana.

Thanks for the input.

Well going to the larger wheels on both front and back would allow for more flexibility in tire sizing at least then right? Sorry I had that backwards. I am looking at a set of BBS RSGT's and wondering whether or not those are good track wheels (8.5' front, 9.5' rear in 18')

I see your issue. I have the Carrera S 19's that are 18' front and 11' rear. Delivered with PS2's 235/35 front and rear 265/35. However the Carrera S came with 295/30 on the rear to better balance therear engine chassis. 295/30 would be too much rear tire which would reduce oversteer (none in the Cayman anyway) and induce understeer (what I am trying to get rid of in the tight stuff). The PS Cups's only come in a 235/35 for front (aok) and 265/30 in the rear (what I had to go with) or 305/30 for the M5 which would be even worse than the 295/30 scenerio. I may go to Fiske 18's for the track and will have to figure out if 8's and 11's would fit, then finding the right track tire. I have no expereince with that BBS so I do not know.

I got them because my croc has the stock 19': wheels which are heavier and I wanted to run 18' tires. Specifically, the Toyo RA1 245/275 combo. They are excellent track wheels; they are forged.

i have fikse profil 10's 8.5' and 10'. if you go bigger than that you need some drastic offsets and may rub.

as far as tires go, RA1 is the best for the car in term so of sizing right now 245/275. i am on my second set now.

email me at whitedot88@yahoo.com (i am in SF, CA). i am selling the fikses. too many wheels right now.
