had the car at the track for 5 days and the seals on the power steering pump are shot. I did some research on rennlist on the boxster forum and found that they had similar issues with overheating at the track. You guys that plan on tracking a lot might want to consider a cooler, or an UNDERdrive pulley. Mantis is working on the UNDERdrive pulley , a few weeks away.
I think that, this was pointed out by Brad Roberts and the solution was to add extra conduit on the Boxsters, whereas the Cayman was suppose to have this issue fixed by Porsche as shown on the picture below. Of course I could be wrong.
<hr />Interesting that Mooty hasn't reported any similar problem, or has he already addressed this somehow? His claim of putting the most miles on a Cayman since launch, either on street or track, is probably accurate. Thanks for the heads up craigny, and hope you get this sorted quickly. Mooty, are you around and have any input/thoughts?
all I can say is that I have had similar problems in my audi s4, and once I put on the power steering cooler they went away. Of course you could just keep going back to the dealer and have them fix the problem every 5 or so track days. But who wants to get stuck with no power steering trying to get home from the track. Got the car back Friday after bring it in on Thursday, nice 1 day turnaround, they replaced the whole line and seals.
These are all band aids. The real problem lies in the steering knuckles. When lowered, the cars experience excessive BUMP. You dont feel it in the car behind the wheel like you would a early 911.
We can slow the drive pulley down, we can add coolers... we can add line...
The ultimate solution is correct the bump steer at the upright by using something similar to what we use in early 911's/914's (ERP bump kit)I personally believe the real issue is excessive side loading on the actual rack do to the excessive bump steer. At all times the bump should be as close to zero as possible. POrsche fixed this exact issue with the GT2's and 993 RSR'S by creating a new cast upright with revised geometry.
Whatcha think Mantis?

Funny you guys should mention this, my car was just in the shop last week to get the power steering return line replaced because it was apparently leaking and causing something to squeak on the front mostly during right hand turns (I have no idea how but this is what the dealer told me)
A couple of answers, one we have a leaking power steering line on our car. Brad ,I dont think that a bump steering kits going to anything about fliud leaks, cause or effect. Porsche has a problem with quality of parts. The underdrive pulley is going slow shaft speeds down. Under normal driving, the revs are much lower and stay lower, compared to track driving. The pump then is running at a average speed inwhich it was designed for. Also we all pick up some hp , water pump, p/s pump, a/c compressor all running slower absorbless hp 5-8 hp. I do not think Porsche planned having the Cayman revving 4k to 7 plus k all day long at the track. Ernie
Correct Ernie. I already new about the line leaking/popping out on the Boxsters and Caymans.
Cause and effect?
Steering rack on lowered cars causes excessive bump steer which places higher loads on the power steering system? I have corrected a BoxsterS with the bump steer kit and it ended the pump headaches.
I 100% agree about slowing the accessories down. I suggested this when I first learned of the different pully's on the GT3 street cars. NASCAR has been doing it for what seems to be 100 years now.. ha ha. Mustang guy's have been doing it since 1984 when the first roller cam'd 302's came off the line.
Nothing new. We just need product.
Funny thing: Vipers have a real finned Earls style cooler in place. Why did Dodge figure this out, but Porsche could'nt? ha ha
