Has anyone had success in SCCA Solo with the Cayman S in SS class?
Locally the Z06's are consistently faster than our Cayman and others. Notice in last North American Pylon reports on several divisionals and Pro Solos that SS is usually won by Z06 or Elise with some GT3's close. No Cayman entries!
I think someone on this forum did a few with G. H. Sharp driving early in the season but do not know how they did. Noted GH was driving a Mini recently.
Is the Cayman in the wrong class? Or do we need more seat time?
If I believed in SCCA I might go trounce some Z06's, never any problem with them in local autox with the Cayman so I believe the Cayman can easily be competitive with them despite SCCA's disdain for all things Porsche...
For some reason the last decade or so SCCA has been placing Porsches in categories where they aren't competitive and it has turned a lot of Porsche drivers off to SCCA. I've heard it stems from someone in national management at SCCA but I have no idea who or why. The SCCA corner workers at HPT (the home of SCCA) have all been very nice at our PDE events and autox's. I know that in our region SCCA tends to set up autox events that favor high hp cars with several straights, generous cone spacing on slaloms, etc. I highly doubt anyone but a seasoned pro in a C6 ZO6 vette could have come close to my autox time in our last Porsche club Autox event because the course was a tight one! I'm not saying SCCA is bad, I'm sure SCCA varies by region just like PCA, but on a national level they don't seem to care much for Porsche for some reason.

the CS has no prayer IMHO in SCCA Solo or ProSolo competition. It classed is Super Stock, going against C5 & C6 Corvettes, Elise (much lighter with adjustable suspensions), GT3, etc. Next step is the A Street Prepared class, which house all the above cars, plus E46 M3 and few others. The M3 is not an issue normally, however, people had over 6 years of development on it, hence they are better setup than any CS might be.
G.H Sharp was using Donnie's CS beginning of the season. I think they concluded that it will not be competitive and he moved on to the Mini. Donnie still runs the car in local events in Richmond and NC I believe.
It is not that SCCA does not like Porsches. The issues is price/cost. SCCA is very careful in keeping Solo programs a grassroots sport. So, any car that is not widely available and price points that avg. Joe can purchase, they put it into SS, which is the highest class in stock categories.
The CS won't be in the top 5 at the national level inSolo and Prosolo, but in Time Trials it might have a chance, but not much.
FT thanks for the update on GH's experience with the CS. If he gave up on it I think you are correct that it will not be competitive nationally in SS. He was driving and tuningPorsches very well 20+ years ago and I think may still prefer them if competetive in class.
Jim Michaels and I did the VA Commonwealth Games two day A/X at the Danville airport with our Caymansrecently and found the C5 Z06's considerablyfaster. As you say they have been around longer andthese were well set up.Two were trailered in and the other just brought tires, all were using Hoosiers or V710's to our MPS Cups, not to mention drivers 30 some years younger.
Re SCCA classing, they suredon't give Porsches any slack IMO. The GT3's in SS is probably correct but not so sure about the Boxster S and CS. But I am accustomed to it. My '73 914 (91 bhp) has been in AS, BS andCS since I bought it in '72 and was always a local winner until about 3 years ago. All the cars I once ran against have been declassed to ES or lower but the 914 remains in CS against still in production Miatas, etc. which could be considered a compliment to the cars i suppose.

I am with you. CS is a lot of fun but Corvettes will beat it, I am not sure of the Elises though. I certainly would love to see your 914 autoxing, that would a hoot to watch.
In local PCA autoxes I had some luck with CS, but I don't think the driver base is as rich as the SCCA-oriented drivers in terms of ability; so I am going to stick to PCA
Are you by any chance going to be at VIR during Sept 8-10 for the DE?

FT, Yes I plan to do the Potomac DE at VIR in Sept. Also doing Car Guys there Aug. 4-6. May skip the 6th for an autocross in Radford though, and may use the 914 if the weather is good.
Note you are the Zone 2 coordinater, are you a long time PCA member? I was Zone 2 Rep. between Alan Friedman and Chuck Drake several years ago.
I wonder if K-Man will be doing the SCCA Solo nationals at HPT this year?
Maury

Awesome, I will see you at VIR in Sept
I am the Zone 2 moderator within this web forum; otherwise, I have only been a PCA member since January. Amazing, we have more than the CS as common.
I agree, if Ken participates in the nationals, it would really something hear about afterwards. I am thinking of doing the Ron Katona Memorial Autox this Sunday at FedEx field and hope to see some old freinds.
Cheers,

I was wondering about the Cayman in SCCA autocross and found this thread using the search. What are the thoughts here on a Cayman (not S) in autocrossing SCCA AS?
