I bought my Cayman with 19' Carrera Swheels and recently bought a seperate set of 18' 2006 Boxster S wheels to use primarilyon the track. I also have PASM.
I was a bit suprised at how much softer the ride feels with the 18' wheels. Response at turn-in was noticablly more slugish especially on tight slaloms in an autox. While driving on the street with 19' wheels i usually leave PASM in normal mode, but with 18' wheels i find normal mode too soft. With PASM on the 18' wheels feel just a bit stiffer then with 19' wheels with PASM in normal.
I imagine that some of the added sluggishness is due to the tires. The 18' wheels i bought came with almost brand new Bridgstone RE050A N0 tires (Not my first choice, but i got the wheels+plus tires for $1500). To my suprise i found that the bridgestone tires are 5lbs. heavier per tire compared to the PS2.
Anyone else have a similar experiance? What have you done to help improve the cars handling response?
Those of you running 18' wheels with track tires, how much of a difference in sidewall stiffness is there between a regular street tire and most track tires?
PASM - Porsche Active Suspension Management
This active damping system offers continuous adjustment of individual damping forces based on current road conditions and driving style.
The driver can choose from two setup modes, ‘Normal’ and ‘Sport’, using a separate ‘damper’ button on the center console. ‘Normal’ mode is designed for general road driving and circuits with uneven tarmac. ‘Sport’ mode is intended for smoother track surfaces, where the harder settings help eliminate pitch and roll.
In either mode, PASM continuously evaluates the current conditions while automatically selecting the corresponding damper rates from the respective set of mapped values.
A range of sensors are used to monitor the movement of the body under acceleration, braking and cornering maneuvers, as well as on poor road surfaces. The PASM control unit then evaluates this data and modifies the damping force on each individual wheel in accordance with the selected mode. The result is a significant reduction in body movement as well as a better grip on the road.
For example: if ‘Sport’ mode is selected, the suspension is automatically set to a harder damper rating. If the quality of the track surface falls below a certain threshold, the system immediately changes to a softer rating within the ‘Sport’ setup range. When the quality of the tarmac improves once more, PASM automatically returns to the original, harder rating.

i have 19 and 18' both with ps2. car has oem steel suspension. the 19' feels nicer, firmer and more responsive. i have drive them back to back over 100x.
on track i run RA1 or mpsc on 18' rims.

I believe the side walls are quite a bit stiffer on RA1/mpsc vs. most regular street tires. Is the difference very noticable? How is the responsivness with 18' RA1/mpsc vs. 19' ps2?

i only drive ps2 on street. it's probably the best street tire available.
RA1 can be street driven too, mpsc is too $$$ for street use. on track ra1 and mpsc are much stickier than ps2. but on street, you will not really benefit from ra1 or mpsc. especially with mpsc, street driving will not even get it to operating temp and if you hit water, you are DEAD.

I have no intention of driving track tires on the street (except perhaps to/from the track). I was just a bit disappointed with the performance of 18' street tires on the track versus the 19' street tires i had used initially. I was really just asking how 18' wheels with track tires feel compared to 19' wheels with street tires? Obviously the level of traction is probably much better, but what about firmness/reponsiveness?

I know they're not N0 tires and not on a Cayman, but I've currently got RE050As on my G35 Coupe and I've not been impressed with them. At first I thought about trying to kill them to get something else, now with me getting ready to trade the car in I've been nice to them.
I'm certainly not a fan of the Bridgestones on my 18' wheels now, but there is no sense in throwing away a set of new tires. A few track days and autoxs should finish them off and tehn its on to something better.

as far as street tires go, i have no driven anything better than ps2.
s02, s02a, s03 are not even close. none of the goodyears or pirelli hold a candle to ps2 either.
Try the Bridgestone 050 Pole Position or the RE01. I rode on 01Rs on a different car, I think they are pretty impressive; though they don't have the right sizes for the CS. I also think the 050s are actually better than the PS2s, but that'sjust me.
