Club Sprint, rollover, track day insurance

1. I had my 2nd ever Porsche Club sprint yesterday at Sandown raceway. I was really happy with how I wen't shaving a full second off my previous best lap time to end up with 1.28.

When I left (early) I was right in between a husband and wife in a Boxster who have been racing it at most events for quite a few years. I obviously have the better car, but they have a heap more experience. I was only .2 of a second slower than the Bill.

Still, I thikn I have a way to go as there was an experienced driver in a 996 who set his best lap time at the track with a 1.25. His car has had a bit of a work over by Porsche Motorsport and arrived on a trailer, but I think it has standard engine power as it is in my class. There are still a few areas where I know I can carry more speed and with more confidence and experience I am sure I can get another second or two off my time.

2. A 944 driver rolled his car in the gravel trap, and was luckily inhurt. He had a roll cage. This made me wonder how much rollover the Cayman protection the Cayman has standard? I am sure that big, high curved roof is quite strong. Would you be safer in a Cayman's roof or Boxster with roll bars??

3. For the Aussie's out there, I have heard that Vero insurance have now confirmed that their cover provides full comprehensive insurance for Events Oneil track days, for Porsche owners only. This is great news. I am with Vero... Of course Events Oneil days don't allow timing, but a great way to get out on the track without fear of sendign yourself bankrupt if you get it wrong...

I will take a roof over a Boxster with roll bars. Just make sure you follow all safety precautions and good luck improving your track times!

I have driven with Trackmasters out at Watkins Glen a number of times over the last 3 years, they won't let a Boxster in their driving course or any roadster for that matter unless it has a full roll cage. No problem with hard tops..

Oh, I don't know about that...

I know I'd never run any car with a harnessbar and harnesses without race seats and a full rollbar at a minimum...

Scary photo! Agree with dw, I wouldneed at least a roll bar, cage ideally, and race seats with holes for shoulder belts and anti subsif using a harness.

That said, any verification on the photo being of an actual crash? With all the alteration of photos so easily done these days makes me wonder. The wheels appear to be earlier Boxster wheels and the side vent looks a little odd to me. Wishful thinking perhaps? The Boxster windshield frame is supposed to be able to support the car, as I understand it. If this is a true photo the CS must have a weaker one?

Car may have landed on its roof after falling off the cliff. I don't think I've ever seen a Porsche roof caved in that much. The car appears to be a 911 turbo with twist wheels, but I see no rear wing.

Yes, the rear wing of a 911 turbo is in place. I had to enlarge the photo to be sure.

I was wrong about the 944, he had no roll cage. The windscreen was cracked and roof badly dented but I dont think the steel supports were damaged. Cars in A and B class with roll cages are rare at my club.
