New to track days..how to prep?

Love driving my '06 Cayman S..Incredible car.
My question to anyone out there that loves to take care of their car, and isn't in a position to buy a new one every 3 months.
I've put on about 5000 miles on the car since January of 07, and I'm doing a track day at the end of April at thurnderhill.
Any suggestions as to what I need to do to prep for this?
I haven't done anything to the car, not even changed the oil yet (should I?)
A friend also has a lift in his garage, could I (and should I) remove the bottom panels and change/maintain the car myself?
I also have 19" wheels, am I OK using these or should I look out for used 18" ones?
Any suggestions are welcome that will help with this and future track days. Thanks

Having track wheels and tires is a good idea if its going to be something you do more than once a season. Lighter wheels are key and you may want strong, cheap wheels that you dont' care so much about in case they were curbed somehow. Track days will kill your street tires.

I'd say you're safe to change your oil after the track day, but your mileage may vary.

Take all the weight you can out of the car - I take out spare tires, jack, tools, etc.

Make sure you wear pants and closed toe shoes and other appropriate attire, or you will not be allowed to race.

Check your tire pressure very carefully.

Your first lap or run, take it EASY, its a walk through of the layout. Do NOT rip it up the first time.

Warm up the engine before your run, and don't shut it right off right after the run. Don't put the parking brake on right after your run when the brakes are hot.

Stay calm.

Thats all I can think of.

Good thoughts, Kor. Another really great way to prep for your first track day is to use the search function and you'll find several threads in the 'competition" forum with do's and don't's, and lots of other advice. I believe I remember someone posted a great track day checklist, too... let the search tool be your pal, you'd be amazed what you'll find.

I might also add that you might want to attend an autocross event or two before you put the car on the track - and get a little seat time that will give you a chance to learn some of the limits of your car in an a safer environment than even Thunderhill (even with all it's runoff space) can provide.
