Thumbs down Another dead battery

Yikes. Went abroad for a week and for the second time, no battery. Gave it a charge at my local tire guys, worked fine for a couple of days of good driving, and this morning, dead again . I have read all the threads on this subject, and I think there is a big problem with with either the electrical system of thecar (draws so much power at idle) or the quality of the batteries used in the CS are crappy. Some many horror stories. I hope PAG listens up.

Looks like I have a faulty Battery. Letting your car sitting there for more than 6 days seems to be really bad for it. Couple of charges, still one day later or 2, dead. Seems to loose power very quickly, despite a deep charge, and even 40 min of driving. And once it goes bad, becomes useless in my opinion. Plus heard you loose like 25% of the capacity forever at the first drain. I am taking the car to the dealer to inspect the alternator/wiring just in case. Also verify this scoop about the battery. What nonsense.

That is ridiculous that you can't let the car sit for 1 WEEK! I just started my 1 on 6 off routine with my CS on Monday. If I find a dead battery when I start her up on Sunday morning....I'm gonna be real pissed

From a non-mechanic....

1. I would be sure that you didn't somehow leave something on in the car that might discharge the battery in a few days.

2. Assuming that number 1 above is not the case, I would take the car back to the Porsche dealer and insist that they search for a possible electrical problem and insist they replace the battery for free, plus fix any underlying problem if it exists.

3. Shame on Porsche if you have to concern yourself about the battery if the car is driven for a week or two. What will happen when it is really cold?

Battery

There was a lot of discussion of this in a previous thread last year. I know I've left mine undriven for over 2 weeks in the winter with no problem. Key is most of the electronics shut down after 7 days. I yours didn't that would kill the battery.

If you frequently leave it undriven (and not on a battery tender), then check out Priority Start. Disconnects the battery when it gets too low, leaving enough to start the car.

There has got to be something wrong with your battery. I go out of town 1 week a month and my car always starts up after sitting for a week. Not sure what is going on with your car, but you absolutely have a problem that the dealer should fix.

We have talked about this a lot of times but it is still a bit of a puzzle. I know that my dealer has tenders on all the locked Porsches, Audis and Mercedes to prevent battery failure. So the guess is that when locked and not driven the battery will drain to the point of not being capable of starting. I still would like to know what Porsche does at delivery to ensure a fully charged battery or if they don't address it at all. I can theorize that a car delivered with a battery that is not fully charged and then not driven much will be much closer to failing after being locked for an extended period. Is that a week or a month or ? Too many variables including bad batteries, bad alternator and so on to really figure out.

If purchased from inventory it might be a good idea to have the dealer test the battery and provide the results before accepting the car.

Same happened here. 1 week, dead.
I may go skiing in 3 months time for a week so lets see then.
I was also wondering what the leakage current was. If we measure it we can calculate how long it should last and reverse calc what the real Battery capacity is. I could do it but too lazy at the moment.

I see your in MD, joined in March? Did you have the car in Feb sitting outside?

I'm pretty much sure sitting for a week in Feb temps here (high single digits to high teens at night) would have equaled dead battery. My answer was to stick the tender on it.

New input on old issue: My 5,200 mile, 1 year old CS started and drove perfectly following 5 1/2 weeks of non-use (unlocked, San Diego temperatures, in garage)). Is this a record?----not counting winter-stored cars that are started periodically or use "maintainers". It should be noted that this is a charmed car (cross fingers) never having had ANY issues, unless you count a mild, self-curing hatch clunk, and still does not have a mark or ding on it!
