Mechanical rattle

Now the weather has warmed up and the windows are down I have noticed a loud rattle from under the car at set speeds while the engine is cold.

The rattle lasts for about 1 - 2mph in each gear and is only possible to hear when slowing (i assume it is there when accelerating too). It is very loud and causes people walking along the road to stare!

Seems to happen at 22mph in 2nd, 31mph in 3rd and 40 in 4th.

Any ideas and should i divert to the dealer?

As i said after about 2 - 3mins driving the noise has gone.

There have been some problems reported on some of the early cars with an oil pressure relief valve unit that made noise when the motor was cold. The sound was more like a low screaming noise, though. Haven't heard of any problems with these in a long time. If it bothers you, have it checked out at the dealer...

I have this exact issue in a 2007 Caymna S and it has been diagnosed by the dealer as a know Porsche Bulletin (problem) and they have said that this is the "oil pressure relief valve" as mentioned in other threads.

This is not just early 987s - apparently it is any of them.

It is an easy warranty fix and I was told there are absolutely no negative side effects of this noise other than the noise.

I will be getting this noise remedied at my next service shortly...but this does require the oil pan to be removed.

...anyone know if there are any negative issues typical with this work?

I had the same noise for the past few months. Now my baby is in the dealership with its transmission on the shop floor getting its fly wheel replaced. FYI, my car has less than 6000 gentle miles.

What shop? I'm in Atlanta too...and will be getting this fix done next week while also getting a Limited Slip Diff installed - better make sure I'm geting the right fix here...or I'll be spending a lot more time in the shop than I want to.
