When I go over bumps with the passenger window down i get a quick little squeak from somwhere on the passenger side. Sounds like it's back near the b-pillar. I only get it with the window's down.
Is it a squeak or a rattle? I had a rattle under these circumstances and the cause proved to be a loose bolt that allowed the b pillar to move around a bit. The bolt in question can be seen where the passenger seat belt enters into the plastic housing at the base of the b pillar. The dealer tightened the bolt and the problem vanished. Only happened when the window was down...
I think the sound can manifest itself in many sounds. I had a ticking sound coming from the passenger side b pillar in first and second gear. 1st and 2nd gear were the only times I could hear it. I took it too the dealer and they, as Yellow Sub describes, tightened the bolt next to the b pillar and seat belt. The dealer also adjusted the small passenger side window and the sound has vanished.
OK, so my news is that on my second visit to the dealership armed with print outs from the various postings here, I finally got my noise eliminated - again it was the bolt at the base of the B pillar that was loose along with one of the lower bolts on the window frame - bliss......, and thanks to all for the advice via the forum.
That said, the funny side to this is that going in really pissed that they hadn't listened to a word I'd said first time, and returned the car to me after two days with a "sounds good to me" report from the so called technician, this last time I was doubly annoyed because a second unwanted noise had appeared between time. This one sounded just like they had left something rolling around in the passender door frame in their previous wasted efforts. Turned out to be a half empty bottle of Diet Coke under the passenger seat! My daughter is toast!
Glad you got the problem resolved, though it sounded like the rear strut squeek I had when I got my car in November. It took two dealers and three attempts to verify what I told the first dealer the first time I brought it in - it's the rear strut. Unfortunately, the dealer that confirmed it dented my rear corner panel in five places pushing up and down on the rear wheel well. But they were happy to offer to have their body shop repair and paint the panel of my one-month old Cayman. Porsche North America offered the same. I declined both offers. I'll let you guys know how my diminished value claim goes as soon as I get off my butt and file it.
The reason the noise only appears when the window is down is that when the window is raised it applies pressure on the b pillar and keeps it from moving around. At least that was the case with my car...
i have the same sound -- definite squeak when the window is down (driver's side). it is an interesting, faint, rapid "tick, tick, tick" when the window is up.
however, i cannot bring myself to let someone start picking-apart my interior to fix the problem. yes, i am ANAL!!!
it took forever, but i finally found the noise source. pressing firmly in the correct spot on the largest, length-wise piece of plastic causes the noise to go away. and, this plastic piece can be wiggled a bit -- definitely loose.
eventually, i'll give-in an have it fixed. if i knew how those rubber + plastic parts interleaved, i'd pull it apart myself. but, i'm afraid i'll damage something... and then the repair comes out of my "hip national bank", not theirs.
I suspect that as these cars gain more mileage and "loosen up" more noises will be heard. In my case it seems like it is getting worse each day. From a rattle in the area of the speaker in the right rear (it even seems like static sometimes) to a "chirping" behind the driver side door and now a vibration rattle in the glove compartment area. Complicating this whole thing is that the noises are intermittant. I anticipate that if I go to the dealer they will disappear all together. Geez, maybe the car is haunted?
I am a little disappointed that a $60K automobile would have these issues.
Of course the solution is to drive only on newly paved roads....not an option in the golden state!
Anyone else have this problem????
I too finally isolated my irritating chirp to the side window lower 'b pillar' stud/bolt. BE CAREFUL if you tighten it yourself- the stud is hollow and easily breaks. I was able to secure it anyway, but I almost bought myself a $175 window + install.
