replacing the stereo

Like most people it seems, I think the stereo is quite weak. Except for the booming it sounds sorta like listening through a telephone (though I did improve this a bit by turning treble to +9, bass to +3, loudness on, and fade to -2).

I want to add mp3 anyway, so I'm going to replace it. For anyone who has done that, should I replace the speakers too? I can't tell if they are poor, or just the receiver. I have an 07 CS with I think 9 speakers (not Bose).

Thanks.

The stereo is worse than "quite weak," it's pathetic, in my view. Easily the worst in-car radio I've had in the past five years, and my comparison is VW Jettas, an R32 and a MINI, nothing high end.

I'm quite seriously considering the Pioneer AVIC D3, although I reckon it will be a bit of a challenge to install as I will do it myself.

There seem to be a few area where Porsche cheaped out in these cars, and the radio is certainly one of them. Why are the window wipers worse than in Fiat Punto (non-aero), and why are the valve caps painted to look like metal when they're plastic? My base MINI has genuine metal, beautiful valve caps and a nice radio with iPod compatibility!
